Dear list members,

I am thinking about a possible date for Teaching English Grammar 2.
Would Saturday 2 July 2011 work? I gather from the day and from
feedback that we would like to have a combination of research into
teaching grammar, research into grammar, and good practice talks and
workshops. Is that correct?

Best,

Carolin

Dear Carolin

This all sounds very good to me.

I think that some 'good practice examples' are essential as hearing mostly about 'issues' and 'theory' can be frustratingly limited for a practitioner audience. Please try to get 'warts and all' accounts rather than those that paint a 'rosy picture'.

Am hoping you will keep me on mailing list even though I have my 'marching orders' to leave employment here, as I mentioned to you, because of reaching 'retirement age' (Am hoping to find another employer - that doesn't have an ageist policy - or continue with voluntary work in teaching and research. This will probably be 'community-based' (in neighbourhoods, informal education as I did a few years ago with Ruskin College). Grammar and writing skills are an important part of such work especially as many participants have had limited formal education and tend to have literacy difficulties too.

Audrey

Hello folks,

That date sounds perfect; are you sure you don't mind having a grammar tourist along for the ride?

Great! Teaching English Grammar 2 will be held at Winchester on 2 July
2011, larger than before. We will call for practical examples (both
good practice and maybe also workshops on designing teaching material,
if someone is willing to run one?), also research papers on grammar
and on teaching grammar at all levels and in any discipline. Call for
paper deadline for December? Let me know if I am missing anything, and
I'll get going and write the call for papers.

Dear All,

Unfortunately, the university is already housing two conferences on
the 2 July next year, one of them the Winchester Writers' Conference.
Would 9th July work as well? That is the Saturday after the proposed
date. The 25th June also works, though not with the nicest rooms.

May struggle with the 9th. Being in frozen northern wastes, our academic year for PGDE students differs from that in balmier climes. Ours are due back in mid August so any leave I can take will be in July.

Dear Carolin,

What a shame, after such a resoundingly positive response. For me, the second date is also fine.

Best wishes,

Colette
