Dear All
In case you missed an interesting radio programme on grammar, here are the details:-
Radio 4, Thurs. 29 July, 4.30pm - 'Material World', a weekly half-hour prog. re. scientific research.
(if you listent to the pod cast, it is the third of three items about 15 mins. into the prog. )
Re. research published in the Journal, 'Lingua'. Interviews wih Dr Ewa Dabrowski, Northunbria University & Dr Fred Dick, Burbeck College, London.
Points covered re:
* Noam Chomsky's theory re. 'universal grammar'
* as language is so complex .... we must have some innate endowment to learn it......?
* how easily children 'pick up' languages
* an experiment, using sentences (passive sentences and ones with universal qualifiers): the kind of research that is used with young children re. comprehension was used re. individual differences in native language attainment, using relatively simple sentences which concluded that 'innate grammar is not as innate as we thought'.
DIscussion questions:
* 'What is going on in our brains when we process grammar - physiologically? eg. use of frontal lobe re. planning?
* With blogs and 'twittering', do we need grammar any more? Opinion of researchers - 'Yes - or we would still be saying, 'Me, Tarzan; You, Jane'!
