Piasta and friends found that kids needed to know 18 lowercase and 17 uppercase letter names to be predicted to be successful in first grade reading.

Zill & West reported that two-thirds of entering K students already knew the letter names and one-third knew the consonant sounds.

The OS data are old. If any child beginning K in the US today and does not know the letter names, as Vellutino has pointed out, is already at risk of becoming labeled as LD by the end of first grade. His view is that on the first day of K we need to establish who doesn't know all the letter names and on day begin intensive and expert remediation.

Is anyone aware of normed data - letter ID for kindergarteners? I am aware
of the norms for the OS, but as far as I know, the data is for 1st graders?
I am working to get K teachers on board with early intervention with K
students and was hoping for specific data on letter ID.

The Observation Survey has been revised and is now in it's third edition.  Does anyone know if it reflects the current data on incoming Kindergarteners?
