I was thinking about the facilitator/modertator/teacher thing, and starting off classes or events online with newbies, crerating a sense of identity and online presence . . . .

Found this:

The official blurb: Wordle is a toy for generating "word clouds" from text that you provide. The clouds give greater prominence to words that appear more frequently in the source text. You can tweak your clouds with different fonts, layouts, and color schemes. The images you create with Wordle are yours to use however you like. You can print them out, or save them to the Wordle gallery to share with your friends.

Actually more than a toy.

i've been playing with wordle & made individualised clouds that i was able to present to some folks who had worked intensely to organise a celebration of refugees. The wordle cloud reflected each person efforts & priorities while encapsulating the group context & teamwork -itz a very cool tool

Minh - cool.

You have used the word 'celebration',  So we can celebtrate online, and I think this is such a quick neat way to do it.
The other activity it supports is 'Fun'.  :-)

Here is my question: what is the energy barrier to a newbie?
How did it go?

And I will check out http://taggalaxy.de/

Cool.

I'll add it to my wikipage. I wonder if we could make it work as a
personal informatic -

Hi there

Wordle and tagcloud are fascinating little tools. I tried to put my
del.icio.us tags into wordle and had no luck. I'm up for another try.

What clouds have others tried to produce?

I created a cloud loosely based on the table of contents for the
textbook for a web design course that I teach:
http://wordle.net/gallery/wrdl/53207/Web_Development_and_Design_Foundations_with_XHTML_
.

Textbook:
Web Development and Design Foundations with XHTML -- http://webdevfoundations.net

I thought it would be fun to enlarge and print the Wordle to display
in the classroom.
The Wordle also might be useful to jumpstart a discussion about course
topics (either in the classroom or online) but I haven't quite worked
it though yet. :-)

I've added Einstein's Theory of Relativity, a Shakespearean play, and a few
other literary works from Project Gutenberg.. quite interesting to see what
terms come through as dominant...

Might put in my M.Ed thesis next... and my working draft of my PhD
exegesis...

This is a link to a wordle tag cloud that Stephen Downes made of June 13 issue of OL Weekly. This was my first sighting of a wordle. Isn't 'wordle' an excellent neologism? It seems to be satisfyingly apt.

This is GREAT! Have just added several Wordles to a new teaching
resource as a summary and conversation starter. Thanks all.

O.M.G - what a fabulous tool - what do you suppose the copyright situation would be with images you create from other people's photos? does anyone know?

easy to use too - excellent usability design. am so impressed! (i'd send you the image i just made but it might "annoy" a pilgrim and as of last week that's against the law in the medieval village where i live... :-))

seriously - anyone wanting to jazz up their learning resources with images (and my reading is that if you change an image sufficiently, you're actually creating a new one that is copyright free?) should have a look at befunky

thanks minh!

good to see you observing the 11.27th commandment rose:

thou shalt not annoy pilgrims

carved into ragged polystyrene & bought down from a highrise by the prophet Iemma of the brown nose

oops is he a pilgrim?
