Some years back I was talking to a man who grew up in a coal mining
family in Pennsylvania and lived in a company house. He mentioned
going through a 1930's era strike. Since the company house was part of
the compensation and the miners were not working, the company locked
the people out. The man said that they lived in the woods and fields.
