Hello TEAgether!

Thank you all for admitting me to you most excellent tea group here!
Thanks especially to Professor Sherab Chen for his introduction to the
group.

Brief personal background: I am a senior at Georgetown University
(Chinese major, Philosophy minor) writing a thesis on the role of
reflection in the Chinese Tea Ceremony, tentatively titled
"Tealeology: Teleology in the Chinese Tea Ceremony."

I just wanted to briefly introduce myself, and share a few resources
with you all that I have found in my research.

I have been in touch with several tea houses in Taiwan and gotten some
interesting information from them. I contacted 紫藤路 (http://
wistariahouse.com/), located in Taipei, and received the following
documents from their CEO. They will be publishing a book soon, and
were kind enough to send me the following excerpts. All links are to
Google Docs, where you can download the listed document in Word Form.

1. 天地人 - http://goo.gl/J8YM4
2. 周渝談岡倉天心 - http://goo.gl/WaTsn
3. 從茶天地到人文道場 - http://goo.gl/074Gu
4. 茶文化從自然到個人主體 - http://goo.gl/Vp7M7

Furthermore, I have been in touch with Jon Thompson, extraordinary 古琴
scholar, who was kind enough to send me a link to the following poems,
all of which contain references to both Qin and Cha. He is still
looking for translations for several of the poems listed, but I
thought you all might benefit in some way from seeing them.

I may be in touch soon with questions, but for now just wanted to
share some high value research on tea that isn't necessarily widely
known.

A sincere thanks to all of you for including me in your group, even
though I attend a different school than everyone here. As they say - 以茶
會友 :)

Best, and I hope you all are having a wonderful Saturday evening!

Dear Austin,

Greetings!

Thank you for the nice and informative message you shared with the group. I really appreciate the communication with a serious researcher on tea cultures like you.

I can see parallel lines of direction "on the way of tea" here by us, in yours and in the tea-men (茶人) you have been in touch from Taiwan and other part of the world. I would like to foster more collaborative research and learning activities in these directions. Marshall and I are just going to start translating some book chapters or journal articles written by 丁以壽, a Chinese practicing tea scholar, at south China. These articles are mostly on the history and evolution of Chinese Way of Tea, and we believe it is important to have them introduced in English. As a long term translator myself, I think it is also crucial to have some consistency in translation -- so, at the same time, we will try to build an online translation glossary for tea culture related terminologies and try to share with all comrades. We know there are already initiations on this direction, a good example is the project called "Chinese Tea Files" (http://www.chineseteafiles.com/glossary/) -- I would like to seek collaboration with the authors. They have got a good coverage on names of tea and tools, but soon we need to get down to more intangible concepts, such as tastes and then, philosophies...

I'm very impressed when you told me that you're doing some research on the importance of "silence" in tea gathering. I will write you more on this in a separate email -- right now, again, a warm welcome to join us -- and maybe next time we can do a video conference of TEAgether (if you can set up a camera with your computer?)

Also, I would like to take this opportunity to let everyone know that
we are moving our forum to Facebook. Reasons for this change include:
(1) as you may have noticed, Google is going to take off lots of
features from the Groups application; (2) we have a sense that some
people don't use Gmail and not have a Google account, but they may
have a Facebook! We have created TEAgether group on Facebook --
http://www.facebook.com/home.php?sk=group_113397735389042&ap=1
Let's keep the wonderful forum there! To join is easy, just find us
there; or let us know your Facebook name, and we can easily add you as
a member.

While gradually moving to Facebook, we will be still updating and
taking new members at this site for a while.

Stay warm and drink warm teas!

Sherab
