On Windows, I have found Foxit Reader to be quite handy when I need to highlight texts in PDF document, make annotations, etc. etc. Unfortunately, I have not yet found product as user friendly (which also does not corrupt PDF files...) and full-featured as Foxit software...

Doesn't matter, I was reading this thread and found out about Xournal . As it turns out, it's in the repository. It does not natively save in PDF, but once all edits are done, the document can be exported to PDF (and overwrite the old one, just like Gimp with the native .XCE format and original PNG file, for example)

If you do not mind using wine, my recommendation would be to use PDF-Xchange with wine, I found PDF-Xchange, the portable version, to be the best wine based solution, you can use it to annotate, update pdf metadata, measure page, fill out and save forms, and a few more things, there will be no watermarks in saved pdfs, its rendering of pdf documents is blindingly fast, it puts Adobe Acrobat Reader running on any platform to shame even when it is running under wine, I have annotated and updated the metadata of hundreds of documents with this tool and have no problems with PDF corruption, in fact it will offer to fix xref tables in documents corrupted by pdfmod or other pdf software, it is available here: -software.com/product/pdf-xchange-viewer, it runs beautifully under wine. I wished a free product like this was available natively for Linux.

There is a commercial Java based system called, PDF Studio available here: to do a lot, similar to Adobe Acrobat Professional, runs natively on Linux, I do not know how good it is, I think they offer a free trial copy so if you do not mind commercial applications you could check it out.

As Sabacon mentioned, there is PDF Studio a java based tool that is very comprehensive. There's an evaluation version that adds watermarks on documents. To get rid of the watermarks, you have to pay.

I would like to elaborate 'sabacon' answer. Though there are many open source pdf editors available including 'PDF studio' but they seem to have less functionality and stability. Believe me I have used all possible pdf editors and I was so frustrated that I proposed to write one for my Masters project. Finally I settled on PDFXchange viewer on Linux with wine. I use it on Windows all the time and is feature rich just like a professional editor. All you have to do is install it using wine.

From my experience I have found that it does not work well will 64 bit Wine so you may want to make a wine prefix (32 bit) and install it there. You can go to link below for steps to install on Linux: -pdf-reader-in-ubuntu.html

PDF-XChange Viewer lets you view PDF files on your computer or online just like other PDF readers can, but with "Typewriter Mode", you can type directly on any PDF page! Now you can fill out forms and add text to PDF documents that you would normally have to print out before you could write on them.

I was using this for a long time but recently switched to their free PDF-Xchange EDITOR, which is also free but has more editing functionality. I thought I'd notice some limited functionality in the free version or something and switch back to Viewer, but so far it's been better, as I did want more editing functions.

Excellent software, what I'm using for years. It has everything, what you can find in Foxit or Adobe Reader, but it's more stable and faster. Now, I see, there is one more like Viewer - PDF-XChange Editor - with the huge futures kit and different UI. It works the same good as Viewer.

I like this software. I really really do.

1. The problem I have with it is that the dev's don't listen at all. Over the past year I've submitted to their site and on here discussing the obviously missing ability to open multiple PDF's at once, especially since it's tabbed! Instead, if you have to open multiple files, you must go through the motions of opening them one at a time.

2. When going to print a pdf or portions thereof, you can select for example pages 2 - 9. Done and it works. Now when in ANOTHER pdf, and going to print, it actually saves previous instructions (2-9) rather than resetting and defaulting back to "All"

For anyone that deals with financial records and things of the like, you know what I am talking about, and this makes it hard to WANT to use this program.

-1 for just plain old ignoring
-1 for telling me to submit on their site and then not listening
-1 for the issues that it has and leaving them out in the first place

Pros: I have used Viewer many years, and now changed it for Editor.. Time to time I try Adobe, Foxit, some others, just to know what's knew. I want to say - PDF-XChange (all) are the best softwares for PDFs. And price is still ok

This is the one, plain and simple. Looked at ALL the other alternatives to Adobe and this is by far the winner. Bye bye Adobe, you pissed me off for the last time, most recently for CONSTANTLY wanting to reinstall the pdf viewer browser plugin(nppdf.dll), a security risk in and of itself. Even if I disable it in browser options(Firefox), it reappears later out-of-the-blue as enabled after updating... Updating that now seems to happen monthly for Adobe due to its train wreck of security holes. Forcing a plugin, how dumb is that? WAKE UP Adobe. Sheesh!

I keep trying, they keep not listening. you STILL cannot open multiple files at once via the open dialog in the program even though the program is tabbed.
It's ridiculous that they could leave it out even after multiple reviews and reports.
Now a memory leak? unacceptable.

Now lowering from a 2 to the bottom.

ok seriously? Have posted problems over the course of several MONTHS and versions now, and still aren't fixed. Guess the devs don't really care.

Still will not allow you to click on open and then select multiple files to open at once.

-1 for problems
-1 for the run around
-1 for not giving a s**t

If you want to use Free versions there are Free PDF-XChange Viewer ( -softw...duct/pdf-xchange-viewer) for read/edit pdfs and PDF-XChange Lite for create pdf from any Windows apps ( -softw...roduct/pdf-xchange-lite). Also you can try all non-free features with no restrictions but you will get watermarks. PDF-XChange PRO includes bundle softs and it's cheaper then you'll decide to buy each of them separately ( -softw...product/pdf-xchange-pro).

Well I submitted my review and then went to the forum to submit it again since my review here didn't get noticed maybe by the devs... who knows.

In any case, going to have to -1 for the bugs, and -1 for the lack of attention in getting them fixed. Solid app, but can only give an average rating due to these failures.

Been using PDF-XChange Viewer for years and it seems to get the job done for me and is a regular part of my utilities. Reviewer below seems to just be spamming a commercial product and little or nothing about the product in question.

I've been using this app for years but have discovered a couple of glitches that should be repaired. There is no link on their homepage for bug submission, so here they are
1. when click on file open, and going to select the pdf you want, you are only allowed to choose ONE file at a time. For an app that does tabs, it should allow the selection of how ever many (control click) pdf's you want to open and run.

2. When going to print a pdf or portions thereof, you can select for example pages 2 - 9. Done and it works. Now when in ANOTHER pdf, and going to print, it actually saves previous instructions (2-9) rather than resetting and defaulting back to "All"

These are just two. Haven't found any others but I will post if/when I do. Other than that, the application is pretty decent. I'd give it a 5 or even a 10 if those items were fixed.

I have used Classic PDF editor and it works like a charm. So I don't want to use PDF X change. According to my views it is one of the best alternative to Adobe Acrobat. So my high recommendation for this. You may try it

I had read all these reviews and would like to agree with the most of them. I downloaded PDF-XChange and tried. It's excellent Viewer! It's the better then Foxit, Nitro, Sumatra.. It has more free features then others. In latest version I can add/edit Bookmark and XFA-forms and I'm glad to use these necessaries features for free.
