Greetings Hashers,
Most hashers ‘think’ they know the history of the Hash House Harriers, and its origins. Unfortunately, as I wander around this great big blue ball floating along the Milky Way, I still find hashers who are unaware of the basics, not to mention some of the more intricate details. I have written extensively about it over the past decade, and working on a tell all book to come out in 2024. If you cannot wait, you can pick up some of the finer details at https://www.gotothehash.net/history/hhhhistory.html
Although my research is continuous, there are still many things we do not as yet know the details thereof. One area that I would like to share with you this month, is the absolute origin of the adult / family / sometimes risqué sport we call HASHING.
Back in old Britain, men used to hunt on horseback with the aid of hounds, to chase down and locate hares or foxes, by chasing them over the countryside. The hounds had only the scent of their prey to track them down. At some unknown point, the game of ‘Paper Chase’ was crafted (by maybe some adventurous school master, or some overactive students at rugby school) back in the late 18th or early 19th century to mimic hunting. One or two school children would be designated as hares to set a trail of paper, for the other school children to follow . . . you may be interested to read an actual account of this from an old newspaper article that appeared in Harper's Weekly, dated May 23, 1874 . . . https://www.gotothehash.net/history/hareandhounds.html
I have lots more to say about this and will explain in more detail in my book, but I have recently become privy to an institution of higher learning that hosts such a weekly event as paper chase, albeit using flour and chalk due to the advent of litter laws in the UK. Up in the outskirts of Aberdeen, Scotland, at the Portlethen Academy, Sarah 'Fireflaps' Newman-Holden founded the Portlethen Academy H3 that has run weekly (during school terms) since 28 Aug 2019, and has recently celebrated their 100th trail. As this is a school club, participation is limited to the students only. Although Fireflaps has hared nearly all the 103 trails run so far, some of the students have taken up the bag of flour and set trails on occasion. The children really enjoy this weekly activity, as can be seen in adding up all the attendees over the past two years. Between 50-100 students have combined to tally over 1000 participants (both boys and girls), for an average of better than 10 per trail.
It is refreshing to know that the origins of what has become the worldwide phenomenon of the Hash House Harriers, is still alive and well in the United Kingdom.

Digital T-Shirt Museum
Hundreds more shirts have been added over the past few weeks, including 41 for Petaling Jaya H3 in Malaysia . . . https://www.gotothehash.net/t/hashshirts228.html
I have a hundred little things to do on the website, but as time permits, I will try to start consolidating shirts onto one page for clubs with more than 25 shirts in the museum. Smaller totals in the future if I’m feeling particularly motivated. 😊
