Michael Quadrini passed away at his home in the west end of the city on Thursday, following a long illness. The businessman is best known on Tyneside for launching a luxurious floating nightclub on the Quayside 40 years go.

He purchased a former Irish Sea car ferry and transformed it into the Tuxedo Princess. Thousands who partied on board retain special memories of its revolving dance floor and staff dressed in sailors' uniforms.

The club owner was husband to Valerie, dad to Nicholas and granddad to Marcus, 24, and Nicole, 21. He also leaves behind his two sisters Angela O'Neill and Roslinda Wright and business partner Sheila Quadrini.

He opened the Tuxedo Junction nightclub in Newcastle in the-late 70s just as the disco craze arrived. During the 1970s and 1908s the venue, on Market Street, attracted everyone from Princess Margaret to Kevin Keegan.

One of its unique attractions was the tables had their own telephones. The idea was that if you liked the look of someone on another table, you could ring them and offer to buy them a drink, or ask them to dance.

In March 1983, The Chronicle reported how Michael was ready to launch an exciting new project on Newcastle Quayside. He had bought the 1961-built SS Caledonian Princess - a former Irish Sea car ferry - to turn into a nightclub.

However police said resources would be over-stretched and there were enough licensed premises in Newcastle already. This led to the Tuxedo Princess being homed on the Gateshead side of the Quayside underneath the Tyne Bridge.

The boat opened to the public in December 1983 and attracted pop stars, TV personalities and Newcastle United footballers. It remained there - on and off - for the next two and a half decades, becoming part of modern Tyneside folklore.

The Tuxedo Princess was briefly moved to Glasgow, Scotland, and the Tuxedo Royale took up her position. When the original nightclub returned, the Tuxedo Royale was moved to the River Tees in Middlesbrough.
