Dr. Canada surveyed Hab 6 Deck 4, searching for flight crew and scientists, per his orders from Pope.
The first one he found was Warren Riggs, a magsail pilot. The hibernation pod was tricky to access; apparently, some of the programming of the pod had become corrupted over time. Nonetheless, Canada was able to start Riggs’ process of awakening.
He moved to the pod next to it, and found it labeled Bonnie Ferguson, a pilot of low performance spacecraft. Her pod opened without a hitch.
Canada moved next to Dion Taylor, communications officer. This one gave Canada a real headache. The access panel had been damaged by a piece of falling metal from the ceiling, probably from the tremors that had shaken the ship so recently. But then, maybe it happened 500 years ago – who knew? Nonetheless, Canada was able to do begin the auto-shutdown procedure a different way. Nothing like Ctrl-Alt-Del. Dion began her process of awakening.
The next pod’s access panel was physically fine, but had intermittent power to it, though the pod’s main power flow was uninterrupted. It was irritating but not challenging: the pod was opened without a problem. This one contained Jim Holt, the navigator.
The next two pods were a little easier – apart from a little metal fatigue in the hinges, it went smoothly, and soon Chester Rojas, sensor specialist, and Stephan McCarty, chief steward, were beginning their awakening.
Jason Hanson, the cook, presented more of a challenge. Canada noted that he was beginning to associate the difficulty in freeing these people with their personalities, which was a bad idea. Somehow, water had managed to rust the hinges quite radically, making the pod very difficult to open. Difficult, but not impossible.
On the pods of both Cody Dudley (assistant quartermaster) and Sebastian Cohen (traffic controller), the pods had to be rebooted; in fact, Dudley’s had to be restarted three times, and Canada began to worry that it might have had a fatal crash – a phrase which took on extra significance here. Finally, to Canada’s great relief, Cohen’s opened as well, and the traffic controller seemed none the worse for wear.
Then came Keri Ratliff’s pod. Ratliff was an astrophysicist, and no matter how many commands he entered into the control panel, it returned the same message: MECHANICAL FAILURE. That was bad. It wasn’t ultimate – that would be CATASTROPHIC MECHANICAL FAILURE. As it was, Keri was (probably) alive, but maybe not none the worse for wear. Nonetheless, this pod needed mechanical work beyond the scope of what Canada could provide. Ratliff would just have to wait.
The last pod Canada opened on Hab 6 Deck 4 was that of Hershel Sharon, a biologist. Canada was hoping for an easy win this time, but he was denied. He actually had to repair a frayed connection on the inside of the access panel to make the thing work right, but thank God, it did. Canada stepped back and breathed. It would be a few minutes before the awakened persons really began to come around and return to true consciousness. Meanwhile, Canada was physically tired from the effort, and emotionally exhausted, worrying whether Keri Ratliff would live to see the light of day.
He called Pope and told her the results of his efforts. He added, “By the way, Captain Cheatham and Commander Masten did not survive our journey. I’m afraid we’re without a conventional command crew. For the moment, Sgt. Pope, you’re it.” After he ended the call, he silently added, And thank God it’s not me.

With the deteriorating conditions on Deck 4, the newly awakened crew
members split into two groups (ten seems a bit much for one elevator
car), and make their way to the bridge to find out what's going on.
Both groups arrive within a few minutes of each other and crowd around
the planning table near the upper rear portion of the bridge. They
stare for a minute at the image of the comet drifting away, clearly
not expecting to see anything like that. Warren Riggs brings up a
ship status display on planning table. After issuing a few additional
commands to get detailed information he looks up, "Guess this is your
show Bonnie, my sail looks shredded." Bonnie pushes herself away from
the planning table and down towards the first row of three consoles,
selecting the middle console. She looks back up towards the group at
the rear of the bridge, "I heard the doctor say the captain didn't
make it... anyone know who's in charge?"
