As soon as Major Foss set foot… well, it was more like “drifted his foot” into the Control Center, Emma did her best to snap to attention; something a little hard in zero gravity. She did salute him, and stood there, next to the planning table, looking straight ahead like a statue.
When he addressed her, dismissing her presence rapidly without asking for any sort of debriefing, she simply saluted him once more. Her face didn’t betray a single ounce of emotion.
“Sir, yes sir!”
Hopefully, some of the civilians would perk up enough to explain the entire situation to the Major. But it wasn’t her concern anymore. The command wasn’t hers anymore. As far as she was concerned, her duty was back to being an enlisted soldier; a rank and file grunt… which was all quite and fine by her. She had her orders from the Major, and those were to get the hell of his bridge.
She almost kicked herself off the floor and towards the elevator, but she stopped herself.
“Major Foss, permission to speak, sir?”
“Yes Marine?”
Emma did her best to stand at attention in front of Major Foss.
“In your absence, I have received mission orders. Because of the lack of trained personnel at my disposal, I haven’t been able to carry them through, sir.”
“Sergeant, unless I'm very much mistaken, you are the most qualified person aboard this ship at the moment. I have asked the doc not to thaw out anyone else, so I would appreciate it very much if the next time I heard from you, it was over the radio from your suit, somewhere on the other side of the hull."
Emma’s jaw twitched for a brief moment, as she made the briefest of eye contact with the Major. Every single ounce of her being wanted to pound the man into a pulp. Odds are, she was well capable of doing so. She felt her gloves creak as her tightened her hands.
She snapped a salute again, staring straight ahead.
"Yes Major, sir."
Kicking herself off the Control Center’s floor, she flew toward the nearest elevator. As soon as the doors were close, she cursed in a whisper.
“Fuck you very much to you to…”
The elevator doors shutting herself off from the world, Emma sighed and rubbed the bridge of her nose. She took a few deep breaths to reel her temper back in. She had a job to do.
She pushed the button for Hangar Bay 4.
