App vs UN/PW

Hello,

I see in the TD Ameritrade dev portal I am supposed to create an app, but this API only requires user name and password. Trying to wrap my head around why I don't need the app defined. Can someone explain?

TD Ameritrade is using an old API, there is a new REST API that requires API Key and OAuth 2.0 auth flow.
