Hi all.

This time, i thought it would be nice to do some organised preparation starting from now until the ICPC regionals are over.
The tentative plans is to
- Choose a topic for a fortnight or so.. (The first topic is Computational Geometry).
- Solve many problems from that topic in SPOJ etc.
- Look at some famous theoretical papers on that topic and read and present them in TCS discussions.

The topic for this fortnight is Computational Geometry.
Just so that we can compete with each other, i have added a contest
 https://www.spoj.pl/ACMIITM/problems/main/
in SPOJ with just Computational Geometry problems. Its an unlimited time contest. The first guy to solve all problems in that list will get the TCSatIITM medal of honour :P...

Cheers,
Srivatsan

P.S. : Shall we have the first meeting on Saturday? Say saturday morning / afternoon ? Objections/suggestions welcome...
P.P.S : What about getting some prof to put something... Say, Prof N.S.Narayanaswamy, or C.Pandurangan to put something related to Algo & data structures? Anyone willing to help out with that??

I can help out with this. I can get in touch with NSN and CPR.

to Subhashini: Great. So, can u talk to them (one by one) and get back?
I would personally prefer them to put a set of 4-5 sessions based on their papers. It would be cool if the prof pinpoints a 1-2 papers of his and says we will ultimately be trying to understand the stuff in these papers... So, try to hint this format of the sessions when u ask them...

Hopefully this works out...

Sounds like a good format for the sessions.
CPR is not in station, he'll mostly be back sometime next week.

I can get in touch with NSN and find out. So, we would like the sessions to be sometime over the weekends right? I'll see if I can catch hold of him today. He's handling 2 courses this sem and seems a little busy.

Btw, CPR's usual lectures are also generally in a similar format. He picks some good papers (usually those that highlight some new paradigms) and discusses the problem and solution. Here's a sample: http://randomizedalgorithms.wordpress.com/2010/07/09/special-lecture-july-9th/
(This was during the summer).

Ok cool...

P.S. Post a message to the group when something like this is happening!

Lecture series by CPR confirmed.

CPR said he can conduct a lecture series on algos (titled: Joy of algorithms -Things that cannot be found in textbooks)
He would like to conduct the first lecture on Monday (16th August) at 8:00pm. Can people who are interested confirm if they will be able to attend it?

Please confirm ASAP.

Thanks,
Subhashini

+1.
BTW next time make a poll or something.
No one wants a mail in their inbox every time someone else confirms their availability.

Excellent response!

The venue will be the CS department. And i'll try and get a larger classroom. I should be able to confirm the exact venue sometime tomo.

Thanks,
Subhashini

It would be nice if you could also inform other interested students who are not part of the group (including first years).

Thanks,
