Call For ACM ICPC Kanpur Site Contest 2010

(last Date of Registration is 18 September, 2010)

Hi,

The ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest (ACM ICPC) is the
largest programming contest being organized all over the world every
year. The ACM ICPC is an activity of the ACM that provides college
students with an opportunity to demonstrate and sharpen their
problem-solving and computing skills. The contest is considered to be
the "Olympics of Computer Programming".

It is a two tier contest. The world is divided into six regions and
Asia is a region. In Asia there are fifteen sites and Kanpur is one of
them. There are more than 75 sites all over the world. Each site
selects one team as winner of the site and will be eligible to
participate in the world finals which will be held in March, 2011 at
Cairo, Egypt. Please note that IBM is the global sponsor of the world
finals. For more information about ACM ICPC I request you to visit
http://www.acm.baylor.edu

An educational institute first enrolls its best team under a site.
Generally the institute selects it best team through an internal
contest. In case a site finds that there are too many teams registered
in that site, it selects the desired number of teams from the enrolled
teams through a preliminary online (internet) contest and the onsite
contest is held on a specified day to select the winner among these
teams.

A team consists of at most 3 contestants and a coach from the same
institution. Generally each team gets 6 to 8 problems to be solved
within 5 hours. A team can submit the programs in C, C++ or in JAVA.
Online judging software PC2 is used for this purpose. A team who can
solve maximum number of problems with minimum penalty points is
declared as the winner.

This is the Twelfth year that IIT Kanpur will be organizing the ACM
International Collegiate Programming Contest (Asia Region). This year
Kanpur Site Contest will be held on 11-12 December, 2010 at IIT
Kanpur. It is expected that about 150 teams from all over India, and
from other countries in South and Central Asia, will participate at
this site. Because of the limitation of seats at the site, it has been
decided to hold a preliminary (internet) contest on 30 October, 2010
to select teams for the onsite contest. All the teams participating in
Kanpur Site Contest will have to qualify a Preliminary Online Contest.
The last date of registration is 18 September, 2010.

For registration follow the following procedure:

Registration is a two steps process:

Step 1: Register your team on the ACM ICPC Contest's International
Site http://icpc.baylor.edu.This is required and must be done by 18
September, 2010.

Step 2: Fill the registration details at www.cse.iitk.ac.in/users/acm
, take a printout and send it along with the registration fee to the

each of Rs. 1500/- drawn in favor of "ACM Kanpur" payable at Kanpur,

@ Vimal : Hey this time the regionals for Amritapuri and Kanpur are clashing. Kanpur may have less competition but a more unpredictable problem set. Where would you advise us to go?

That's strange. Frankly, I don't know how Kanpur/Amritapuri are,
these days. And from what I hear, the problems are set by ex-ICPC
world finalists (even in our year). So they're expected to be good.
I have CCed Venkatesh Basker; I hope he can tell something.

I might just toss a coin and just go to a place so that I can blame my
choice on randomness. :P

It will actually be a little tough to decide; What I would suggest is,
register for both for the time being (since the deadline for
registrations are close) and postpone the decision to a later stage
depending on where the other teams are heading to. Also, though it may
be different, I predict that 2 Indian teams from Amrita and 1 Indian
team from Kanpur will make it to the world finals. Adding to this,
Kanpur problem set will be quite unpredictable, so taking Kanpur is a
bit of a gamble (i.e.) It is not necessary that the best team will
qualify; the team which implements brute force fastest and has luck
qualifies. So, the choice is yours :).
