If anyone is interested, especially in a financially supporting kind of way, there is a compact yet quite capable lathe on auction tomorrow morning that some of us plan to bid on and purchase for TCMaker.

http://www.hoffonlineauctions.net/cgi-bin/mnlist.cgi?hoff21/410

Monarch Model 10EE Precision Engine Lathe, 10"x20" Capacity, 12.5" Actual Swing Over Ways, 6-7/8" Swing Over Cross Slide, Variable Spindle Speeds: 200 to 4000 RPM, 1-3/8" Hole Thru Spindle, Will Cut 56 Threads: 3.25 to 184 TPI, Tailstock, Hardways, Motor & Controls, Serial No. 10675. Approx 68"x36"x50" and 3,000 lbs.

I have some pictures of it's internal nasty bits on flickr as well here.

pre-emptive question answering:
it will likely cost $1000 or more, we'd appreciate your support
   It is a 12.5" x 20" working envelope
It is built like a tank, in Ohio, in 1941, and weighs about 3000 lbs
Why, Karl would like to teach classes, but wants a beefier lathe, bigger projects need a bigger swing this one is double that of the existing lathes, bigger projects, and better quality require more mass, and horsepower, this is that.
Surely you have the approval of the shop managers, not exactly, Tony has been copied on all discussions, but we haven't heard from him. I'll send this to Jeff as well, but he'll complain anyway.
Why this lathe, cause it's so damn cool, don't believe me check out these nicely refurbed examples.

Feel free to chime in here or email me or what have you. I'll send this to the TCMaker email list too.

As "shop manager emeritus", I fully support the purchase of this lathe.

That and $4 will buy you a coffee at Starbucks ;-)

I'm lousy with names, so I only remember a few from last Weds when I got
signed up - don't feel bad, eventually I'll get 'em if people get in my
face enough :)

Anyway, I talked to a few folks last week about a lathe that my friends at
Global Surplus had bought from the U of MN. Turns out they sold that one
already, but the owner has been storing another one for two years waiting
on customer pick up. Since I asked him, he's ready to sell it if there's
interest.

I haven't got specs on it yet, I just remember from looking at it that
it's about 10x30 or so in size, designed to go on a dedicated stand, and
it's a nice solid manual lathe. Probably weighs about 800-1000 lbs.
Global wants about $1500 for it (because in Russ' words "it's really
nice").

Is there interest in a lathe this size? If so I can go grab some pics and
info, otherwise I can ask them to look for a bigger one.

I'd rather look at this one first, but perhaps. Clausing makes nice stuff, it looks to be in decent shape, and appears to have all of it's parts, plus it's under power. It's been on CL awhile and went from $1000 to $800

Sounds good. I'll probably stop by there anyway and I'll get specs and
pictures so you can compare.

If you like I can check the ways for wear, listen to bearings, etc.
