Anyone have recommendations for PCB assembly houses, either local or not?

I've had great results with Osh Park.  Not local but their prices are great.

They do assembly?  I thought that they only did fab.

I've had great luck with Screaming Circuits.

I found this site online.  Screaming Circuits is about 50% more expensive but I think that they are in the US and Asian Circuits sounds suspiciously like they might be in Asia.  Not that that is necessarily a bad thing but turn-around might not be as good for one thing.

Don,

You are correct -- they are based in Canby, OR.  I like that they're willing to go the extra mile.  A couple times I've had footprint mismatches and they're willing to bend leads and hand solder things if there is any way to make it work.  Obviously they call you before doing that and let you decide.  I've also gone as fast as 48-hour turnaround with good success.  Just for reference, I think I've made about 30 or 40 orders with them over the years, and they have a very solid track record including BGAs, fine pitch, several hundred component 2-sided PCBs, etc.

Thanks for the info, Chris.  It sounds like you have a lot of experience getting boards made for commercial products.  Are you ever around the Hack Factory and/or would have time one of these days to chat about your experiences in this area?

For local, EI Electronics (Mankato), Altron (Rodgers).  They will do the small jobs.

I've also heard good things about Dimation (Burnsville), but haven't used them personally.

The three places I found that look the most interesting are Asian Circuits, Screaming Circuits, and Meritronics.  I got pricing for 300 and 1000 pieces.

Asian Circuits:
  • 300 at $9.74 apiece
  • 1000 at $9.11 apiece

Screaming Circuits

  • 300 $12.43 apiece
  • 1000 at $11.06 apiece

Meritronics

  • 300 at $8.22 apiece
  • 1000 at $5.40 apiece

These are all "kitted",  which means I provide the components and  the boards.  They are single-sided SMT-only with 66 parts of 26 different varieties.

I actually used Meritronics once about 5 years ago and was quite satisfied with them but one time is not a very large sample size and Chris Thorp  has very good things to say about Screaming Circuits.  However, I am leaning toward Meritronics because of the substantial difference in price.   I think I will see if I can find other reviews of Meritronics on some of the other forums.

While I haven't used them for PCB assembly, I have had good experience working with Advanced Circuits http://www.4pcb.com/ for doing my PCB fab work (using their Colorado facility) and they have assembly http://www.onestopassembly.com/ here.

I like Advanced Assembly over in Colorado. I just can't find another place that builds one board on a pick and place manchine using loose components that can also build a run of 100 or more, and they don't complain about the small quantity stuff. A buddy of mine visited the place and said whatever their process is is pretty cool. They use some software to check all of the SMD parts before assembly, too. Saved my butt once on a board where my Eagle pulled the wrong package from the library. If they hadn't caught it before assembly I would have been out a ton of $$. Here's their web addres...http://www.aa-pcbassembly.com/
