Good morning!

I am reaching out to you for assistance in qualifying faculty to teach the PHYS1415 and PHYS1417 physical science courses.  We are in the midst of responding to our offsite concerns from SACSCOC regarding faculty credentials and are challenged with the faculty that we currently have teaching our physical science courses. Each of them have master’s degree/Ph.D. in chemistry.  However, the committee didn’t believe this was sufficient to qualify them.

When submitting our faculty rosters with the decennial report in February, we included this statement in hopes that the committee would recognize that the PHYS prefix for these courses encompassed physical science, not physics:

PHYS is physical science course that covers chemistry, physics, astronomy, meteorology, and earth science.  Since we cannot find faculty with 18 graduate hours in all five areas of study we only require the graduate hours in one area.

What credentials/qualifications do physical science instructors at your institution possess?  Any ideas??

Thank you for any clarification that you can provide.

Wendy

Hello Wendy.  We teach two physical science classes at Midland College.  I would think a masters with 18 gsh in one of those disciplines, but also other gsh (less than 18) in two of the other four areas is what you need, to satisfy SACS.  You would have to build your case and explain proactively why your faculty are qualified to teach physical science.  Any work experience, undergraduate hours, etc. that you can add to the justification would help.  Good luck with it, Richard.
