Good evening everyone. What educational qualifications does your
institution require of faculty to teach academic transfer humanities
classes? Thank you for your valued feedback and have a great night.

Hello,
After intense negotiations with SACS several years ago, Austin Community College, now requires an MA, specifically in "Humanities,"  meaning the word "Humanities" is in the degree name.  Or MA, with 18 hours in Humanities (again, like HUMA would be in course ID.)   Before than we employed professors with MA's in English, Comp Lit, Art History, etc., you know, a degree in the humanities.  I was one of those who once taught Humanities, but could not longer.  So I took 18 graduate hours in HUMA courses from a distance learning institution.    My experience is that there are very few universities that offer the degree necessary.

I was told by my liaison to use English faculty, which is what we are doing, but I have an uneasy feeling that we are going to be required to hire someone with humanities hours as Lyman has mentioned. We have ARTS 1301 in the core as well, so we may be redirecting students that way.

Mark,

At NTCC we either require an Interdisciplinary Masters degree with the appropriate Humanities fields, or any Masters with 18 graduate hours in each of at least two, preferably three, of the traditional Humanities disciplines (History, Art, Music, Philosophy, etc.).

We lost two Humanities adjuncts in our last SACS visit (2012) over faculty credentialing in those courses.

I hope things are going well at Temple and you guys are off to a good fall semester.

We do the same thing at Midland. Preferably a Masters degree in Humanities but at least a Masters degree with 18 hours in three out of six disciplines of English, Music, Art, Philosophy, the Classics, and History. Hope this helps. Good luck, Richard Jolly.

Hello Richard. Larry Gilbert from NCTC. How did Midland do with your SACS visit concerning credentials for Humanities as compared to the SACS visit (2012) at NTCC? It seems you both have very similar requirements to teach Humanities. We (NCTC), also, have similar credential requirements as Midland & NTCC to teach Humanities, but have not had a SACS visit since we revised our credential requirements for Humanities.

Thanks,

Larry

Hello Larry. We did okay. But a lot really depends on the committee. I've seen them go all directions depending on the chair. Hope you are doing okay. Take care, Richard.
