Good evening to everyone,
I am writing to inquire if your colleges have instituted a reduction in the number of hours adjunct faculty may work. Historically, part-time faculty at TCC could teach up to 12 hours. Beginning spring 2015, part-time faculty may teach no more than 9 hours during each long semester and the entire summer (both) terms. We are told this is due to new healthcare legislation. It is going to significantly impact our clinical courses for programs such as nursing. Are any of you encountering similar experiences? If so, what strategies are you employing.
Thanks much,
Dr. Sheryl Harris

.
Temple College has been 9 hours, but we are waiting to see if the affordable healthcare act causes us to make a change.

Dr. Harris:
At Navarro, we limit adjuncts to 9 hours. Our HR department equates every class as 3 hours of in-class plus 3 hours of preparation, so 9 hours of load would equate to 18 hours. An additional class would put the instructor over the 19 hours as part-time.
I hope this is helpful,
Carol Hanes
