I have a question about credit level math teachers. At North Central Texas College, we require a Master's Degree with 18 hours of MATH classes. We are having some problems with schools that offer a Master's in Math Education with classes like "Teaching Algebra in High Schools". I understand that these programs were developed for ISDs that wanted all their teachers to have Master's Degrees, but now the problem is that some 4 year schools are selling the program as "intended for those that want to teach in high school or community colleges". We are running into high schools that want to use these people to teach embedded classes and also adjuncts wanting to teach on one of our campuses. What are you using to credential your credit level math teachers?

Thanks,

We require a master's in math or a related field with 18 hours of grad level classes with a MATH prefix. Related fields are engineering, chemistry, physics, and the like. If the education hours have a MATH prefix, we will count those, but if we do, I look carefully at the content and count only the ones that demonstrate mastery of the discipline. I might count one class if the teacher teaches AP with a demonstrated record of success or has some way to prove competence otherwise. I do have a teacher with an art education degree teaching intro to fine arts, but SACS had a problem with her teaching art history, and it makes sense now, so we took her off of that course. I have an economics teacher with 9 hours of finance, 3 hours of economics, 9 hours of accounting, an MBA, a CPA, and 20 years of experience in the field. I had no problem with that justification, so one thing I've learned is that sometimes you can make a justification if you document carefully. Hope this helps!

Good evening Sara. SACS flagged us during our last reaffirmation in
2010 for allowing a faculty member to teach math classes with a Master
is Math Education. They allowed the faculty member to teach math
classes below calculus with this degree, but required the faculty
member to have 18 graduate hours in Math to teach calculus and above.
I hope this helps. Please feel free to contact me at any time if you
have any questions or require assistance. Have a sensational day!

Warm Regards,

Mark
