Good morning everyone. I am writing to see how each of the institutions plan to handle the
following concerns with the core curriculum.
You have a learner who is core complete in the 080 area under the old core at your institution, changed to a new catalog that includes the new core, but the course or courses are not part of the new core, do you still consider them core complete for 080?
You have a learner who completed a science course under the old 030 core area, is not core complete in that core area, then changes to a newer catalog where the science course already completed is not approved in the new core FCA. Do you count this course under the new core?
You have a learner who completed two 1-hour PE
classes under the old 090 core area and then changes to a newer catalog where
the PE courses are not approved in the new core. Do you still count these
courses as part of the new 090 FCA?

Success Starts Here!
Dr. Smith,
It was my understanding that if a student had started their degree under the old core, they would have the choice of either staying with the old or moving to the new core. I understood that to mean that they would have to complete their core in one or the other. This would make it much easier to keep up with their core completion. First time students in the Fall 2014 semester on would not have a choice. They are under the new core. If a returning student chose to continue under the old core, they would have to complete the courses listed in it. There would be no mixing and matching from old to new core.
This is the way I interpreted the THECB. If I am wrong, I am sure others will catch my mistake and correct me.

Our policy at Tyler Junior College aligns with that of Texarkana, first-time students in the Fall of 2014 have no choice, at this time, continuing students may choose the new core, or they can complete under the catalogue they entered under. We will give credit in the new Core for a course completed before the Fall of 2014, but we will not substitute courses.

I too understood that students starting Fall 2014 have to be under the new core, and those students already enrolled have the option to be in the new or the old core. BUT the real question seems to be if a current student changes to the new (2014/2015) catalog, do they have to change to the new core? That is a good question: can you be taking a program form one catalog and use the core from another catalog?
