They just repaved Kalamazoo from US-127 to Miffin Ave last year – and it is really nice. From there, I usually turn left onto Miffin and then right onto Marcus – which they also just redid last summer. Only thing to note is that it’s a neighborhood, and folks are less than stellar in observing stop signs in that neighborhood – but traffic is infrequent and slow.

There was a project for BWL that was specifically in the township area, which was on Kalamazoo, bordered to the west by Miffin, by the east by Howard, then from Homer to Clippert. The township did the programming but it was a part of a utility repair (combined sewer separation and outflow expansion project). The city of Lansing’s border is west of Miffin. A related project happened in the neighborhood south of Kalamazoo along various streets to tie the larger outflow pipes to the facility on Harton St. Both projects had the roads redone and restriped. Despite the township being pretty caustic to things like bike lanes, we actually got a nice setup along Kalamazoo in the new sections.
The intersections of Howard/Kalamazoo, Homer/Kalamazoo and the area between is managed by MDOT. They repaved under US-127 last summer when they were working on the intersections.

To be included in the meeting minutes from yesterday – The Lansing City Pulse published their article online on the revamp of Michigan Ave: https://lansingcitypulse.com/stories/michigan-avenue-corridor-revamp-starts-in-october,62214 (this was shared in paper form during the meeting).
The city officially put out the notice of the project during a press release at 8:30am this morning : https://twitter.com/LansingPubServ/status/1679468268615086081/photo/1
As we mentioned earlier, this is a /huge/ win for urban cyclists in the city. The design was driven by work from the Lansing Complete Streets group (a subcommittee of this TCBA group), and represents just about everything the group asked for from TCRPC and the City of Lansing. The city sees this as a model for other parts of the city as well as other communities in Michigan for how to design calm, human-focused roadways that promote the “15 minute city.” This will hopefully follow the path of other communities outside of Michigan that have seen similar projects cause a rebirth and revitalization of communities around the projects.

In the last year, I’ve seen similar examples to what we’ve planned in Chicago, Nashville, LA, Denver and Minneapolis. There is also a small stretch in Birmingham, MI that we based some of the initial requests off (they have much wider streets so they were able to accommodate a bit more in their designs). Nashville is closest to what was put together (also a medium sized, capital city… biggest difference is they are on a HUGE hill). Chicago has been the most active in the last few years making HUGE progress putting in different styles of cycletrack across the downtown and near-downtown areas.
