Hi Ronny,
This Mother's Day, bring Mom to the Redwood Theatre for an evening of community, conversation and great film: Earth's Greatest Enemy, the most urgent documentary of the year. Abby Martin's groundbreaking exposé of the world's largest single polluter—the U.S. military machine—this film is essential viewing for the future of Mother Earth.
News has just broken of Canada's plan to permanently host the Defence, Security and Resilience Bank (DSRB)—the first-of-its kind financial institution that promises to be every warmonger's dream. Designed to fund and accelerate a global arms race, the DSRB will funnel public money directly to arms manufacturers, making it easier to sidestep human rights and environmental regulations and support genocidal regimes like Israel. After the film, join our special guest speakers to learn how we can fight back against militarism, fascism, and the climate catastrophe that imperils us all:
- Rachel Small, organizer for World BEYOND War, is a founding member of the Jews Say No to Genocide Coalition and coordinates the Arms Embargo Now campaign. She has two decades of grassroots organizing experience, with a focus on helping communities harmed by Canadian extractive industries.
- Arnd Jurgensen is the current chair of the Canadian Network for the Abolition of Nuclear Weapons. He has been active in the environmental and peace movements for over 40 years, and teaches international politics at the University of Toronto.
- Virginia Thomson is a member of Seniors for Climate Action Now! (SCAN!) a cross-Canada organization founded in 2021 to mobilize seniors for emergency climate action. Virginia is the Chair of SCAN!’s Climate and Militarism Working Group.
- Sharmeen Khan is a South Asian feminist and socialist with three decades of experience in movements and activist media. She organizes with Toronto World BEYOND War, No One Is Illegal-Toronto, and is an editor for Upping the Anti: A Journal of Theory and Action.
Doors open at 5 p.m., and the film starts at 6 p.m. There will be a bake sale offering sweet and savoury treats, as well as keffiyehs, art prints and other items. The venue offers bar service. We'll be hosting another edition of our popular ART RAFFLE featuring the beautiful work of artist, designer & author, Michael DeForge!
Please bring one non-perishable food item to contribute to Community Fridges in the east end.
All proceeds from tickets and the bake sale will be donated to grassroots climate justice work by the Scarborough Environmental Association, mutual aid for families in Gaza, the Toronto Community Justice Fund, and East End Acts. East End Acts for Palestine is a grassroots solidarity group made of community members from the Toronto-Danforth & Beaches-East York neighbourhoods, mobilizing to create political and social change.
If there is a financial barrier to purchasing a ticket, please email us at easte...@gmail.com
See you there!
