Hello TCAN Friends,

We've decided to create a special edition of the TCAN newsletter focusing on the events that TCAN member groups have organized for Toronto Climate Week. In other words, where the real climate action is!

If you have already submitted your events to the calendar, no further action is required. But if you haven't please do so ASAP either by using this google form or by sending your event to us at this email address: steering...@tcan.ca by May 30.

With thanks!
Anne and Minh-Ly (TCAN co-chairs)

There is at least one good event in Toronto's Climate Week (see below), and I hope to see more....

In fact I am actually looking for more, so I hope someone creates more....

..But I suspect there is also some greenwashing happening, as expected everywhere these days....
...even in well intentioned event circles.

The good event is this one:

How a Faster Energy Transition Brings Hope
to the Climate Conversation

Tuesday, June 2
1:30 - 3:00 PM EDT
Centre for Social Innovation: Suite 101
192 Spadina Ave. Toronto
Find more info and register here

BUT
... here's a word of caution about some other events which smell of greenwashing:

FYI: Here is an email I sent to the Toronto Climate Week organizers:

Quote:
Greetings, Toronto Climate Week 2026:

In your greenwashing policy you state the following:
“This policy ensures that all participants — including sponsors, … — uphold the values of transparency, accountability, and impact….
… Greenwashing is the act of misleading stakeholders about the environmental practices of a company or the environmental benefits of a product, service, or initiative.”
End quote

You have a questionable sponsor: Carbon Removal Canada
Here is why that sponsor is questionable:
Quote:
“The Government of Canada provided at least $405 million dollars in subsidies for carbon capture and hydrogen projects in 2025. These technologies have failed to deliver on their promises to reduce emissions and have instead locked in further fossil fuel production.”
Source of quote: https://environmentaldefence.ca/2026/05/21/new-report-shows-10-2b-in-federal-fossil-fuel-subsidies-for-2025/

For evidence against carbon capture, see these links, among others:

Also note that your sponsor, Carbon Removal Canada is partially funded by RBC. See funders at this link: https://carbonremoval.ca/

Here is a quote from an article about RBC in May 2025:
“The Royal Bank of Canada is standing by its decision to abandon its sustainable finance goals and stop public disclosures on its updated climate strategy, citing potential liability under federal anti-greenwashing rules—despite a chorus of sustainable finance experts saying the bank should be able to report progress as long as it is telling the truth.”

Awaiting your reply,
Boyd Reimer

Seniors for Climate Toronto is hosting what could be a very good event if we are able to attract people who are not yet active.  If you can promote to people you know who are in that category, many thanks.  Lyba (SCAN!)
