Our Project Support bricks are in hand.

Just a reminder, there are 2 projects-

First project is the mosaic.
It would probably be simplest to just find a day and have a club meeting to get this all built at once. (as opposed to distributing parts and plans to people to be built in multiple locations).

Second project is the tank car fleet.
We have bulk orders for at least 15 of each of the flag and red/white designs. We still need to order parts that were not included in Project Support (3rd party parts, etc.). Things also need to get printed.
Any ideas how we want to approach this one?

Our absolute deadline to get both finished is Brick Rodeo, but ideally we'd have them sooner.

Personally, I am pretty occupied until end of February, between work, family commitments, and the upcoming display in Angleton.

Ed,

Was just about to inquire about this. Glad to hear that we have the parts. Were the fleet car parts ordered at max quantities, or is it too late for me to order some kits? For building the fleet cars, are we ordering kits separately and then all building together? How does this work?

For building the mosaic, I am available to come to Austin on a weekend, so long as I know a few weeks ahead, but not Mon-Fri. If it is done in a different city or during the week, I might not be able to come help.

After February is fine, but don’t forget that we have Train-a-palooza in Grapevine mid-March.

Thanks,
Christopher Anway

After February is fine with me. There are a number of parts I was going to donate to the cause.

I will need to get those parts together.

Also, will this build be in the Austin or Houston area?

I am assuming you all will have me put the mosaic together for you all after it is built?

It is important that it is assembled in a particular way to ensure transport / reassembly.

I do not mind doing this at my home rather than after the build day as this assembly takes a bit of time.

Greg, for the mosaic, I was wanting to have the mosaic in permanent sections of something like 48x48 studs (or whatever small manageable modules) that can be assembled on site.
We could build in Austin if Steve is up for hosting. Most likely would be a Saturday. We could do this in Houston as well.

The tank cars are currently all club property. We'll build them first and then people can buy them off the club.
Probably we'll need to specify a build day as well for these, but that might be some months from now.

Ed,

Thanks for the clarification. May I put my name down for (at least) one car? Or will that come later?

Thanks,

I’m happy to help as well depending on the day.

Ed,

Smaller sections like you are suggesting may work.

I usually put them together in larger sections.

Hopefully there will be a large turnout.

Building a large mosaic with a lot of colors like this one will take quite a bit of time and may not constitute a “fun” build for some / most people.

I am excited to get together, though.

It will be a fun time!

We build ballasted tracks for fun.

Ed,

Just to let you know the 48x48 sections may not work out unless you want to rebuild the complex technic frame that is built around the entire build for stability.

This is why I use larger sections for transport and for the ultimate build.

We can discuss this as I would be interested to see what everyone thinks about the smaller size / stability issue.

It needs to be modular for transportation.
It doesn't have to be 48x48, but it needs to be small enough to be packed into boxes.

How is the frame built? Is it Technic bricks pinned around the perimeter that are then reinforced with plates?

What was the final agreed image for the mosaic? I am sure it was discussed before, I guess I can find it in the google verse

You may just have to see when we build it.

Laying it down flat in your van in sections with blankets in between would be one way.

However, when it is modular as you would like, the frame will have to be rebuilt each time after breakdown.

The idea is to have Technic around the edges of the mosaic as you mentioned.

I have developed a way to build and transport that works for me after building a number of large mosaics 3'x4' and 4'x6' in size.

The use of plates to reinforce the build would not be sturdy enough due to the size of the mosaic and its weight.

The build also involves a large number of zip ties to make it sturdy along with a pipe system I have developed with Brian Costello.

These non-Lego (yikes) elements avoid gluing, drilling, screwing, and the use of wood (unless you prop the build up on an easel, which I have done in the past.

This build will take quite some time to assemble and construct (as everyone is used to).

Building outside of the parameters of my design based on the BOM is up to the group.

However, it will require many more parts and I have worked to try and avoid that with the builds I do since many parts are already required.
