We've been contacted by Lone Star Hi-Railers out of the Dallas Area, seeing if we would be interested in displaying at their event Train-A-Palooza next year.

Event is 2 days at the Grapevine Convention Center. I haven't asked for more detail yet.

Is there interest in doing this show?

Ed,

This show is very local to me, doing most of my living in and near Dallas. I am absolutely all-aboard on this one!

Thanks,
Christopher

Depending on timing, etc, I could be interested.

March 11-12, which might end up being around spring break depending on the school district.
I assume they would allow setup on Friday. Show runs 10-5 on Saturday and 10-4 on Sunday.

March is early enough that it should not interfere with any of our regular events.

For me, the pros are that it's a new event, a chance to bring our display to a new audience, and to make some contacts in that part of the state. We could also collaborate with DFWLUG, as it sounds like they have interest too.
The cons are... Dallas is 5 hours away, and next year's event schedule looks to be pretty busy.

I agree it would be nice to have new show scenery and audience but if the club decides to go I’ll seriously consider trying to take part.

Biggest downside of any event is to hold it in Dallas.

*rimshot*

Just kidding.  Maybe.

This sounds like a good time I’d like to join if we do it. Since it’s so in advance I can probably take off for it.

Even if most of our regulars cannot make it, the new members and irregulars could make a go of it, right? Jumping in the deep end, as it were.

Well, we need a layout.
And some trains. At the minimum.
DFWLUG also sounds very eager to do this show.

I am still considering going... been wanting to start a proper rail yard, so maybe this is a good time.

Just sayin.

Ok, I am going to commit to this show!
It sounds like we have enough interest to have at least a few other people there.
We can begin planning after they tell us how much space we have.

And we’re on! We have tentatively been given a 10x14 ft space. Additional details to follow.

Good deal, well except for the N Scale size space available. cant even get Ellistown in that tiny space. 🤔

A 10 x 14 space seems to work out to 9 x 13.5 if we use club tables. And that assumes we have a quarter-table, and I do not remember. If we do, it would be six standard tables, one skinny half, and one quarter.

Anyway, it sure sounds like a simple exterior double loop full of town, ideally with a trolley line on the inside, with one forest area that will be very, very thickly planted. Is that the right way to look at the space?

The dimensions I gave him were for the actual layout footprint, so I will assume 10x14 is the space occupied by the actual tables.
That's 12 x 16.5 baseplates. A small layout almost always will generally mean we can only do a simple perimeter loop.
16.5 baseplates is not wide enough to accommodate Ellistown...unless we can put it in the middle of the layout? Maybe without the main line track.

What do you mean by quarter table?
We have a few skinny 1.5x6 tables, and one square 3x3 table.

It would be fun to go but that’s not exactly a lot of space.

It is *indeed* not a lot of space, but it will give us a chance to bring only our best and present a burnished jewel and take some great pictures . . .

PS - Edward, by a quarter table, I meant something 1.5 by 3 baseplates. We chatted about making such at one time, and I could not recall if we ever did.

Gareth- If I ask for an extension to 10x18, would that work?
12 baseplates for Ellistown, and 8 for corners on each end.

I live just a few miles from Grapevine and would like to offer up some spare bedrooms for anyone interested in a free place to crash. Depending on how many of my kids are home during that time, I have 2-4 spare bedrooms. First come first served. Text me 8177268165 if you’re interested.

It totally would

The track can be shifted to the front, and the trail can be shifted to where the track is if need be,

I have asked if they can extend us to 18 ft.

Does anyone have contacts at the Grapevine Mills LBR store?
Or any other Dallas-area resale shops (Bricks & Minifigs, etc.)?

Doesn’t look like we have space for the refinery at this one.

Update, we have the 10x18 ft space.

We can still make space for the refinery.

Good evening and happy new year!

Does anyone know the status of this event? What should be the expectations for TBRR members?

We are still on for the event. It should be similar to our other shows like New Braunfels.
10x18 space but we haven't started planning the layout yet. I think we're still planning for Ellistown and the refinery.

Great. You can put me down as a definite yes for this event.

How many oil pump jacks shall I bring? I can bring any number of them (I have 8 now).

I’ll bring any trains that I have.

Multiple transmission towers (powerlines) will be completed by March. Steve Jackson, Lasseter, and others have seen a built example. If these are MOCs we want to incorporate into this display and others moving forward, perhaps others can help multiply their numbers with the aid of instructions. Someone in DFWLUG has been working on a substation as well. I do not know the footprint yet, though I can ask him.

Thanks,

If it is too early to discuss layout plans right now, do you know when we can expect those discussions to take place?

Thanks,

as this is only 1 month away, can we start discussing as there are some logistical matters to figure out. Hotels / Air B&B etc

Thanks

Grapevine we have Gareth, Derik, Chris, and me so far.
Tony is out for this one.

The 10x18 isn't great but it will fit Ellistown and the refinery.
We may be able to sneak a short parking track area by doubling up a curve.

We can trade out the bridge for a station and fill the top right with city.
I like having a bridge for visual interest but the layout is basically solid. Steve has the bridge, right?

One issue we may have is height matching... the space given doesn't allow Ellistown to sit on dedicated MILS tables.. is the track section in town modular enough to use baseplate track?  Or maybe we have to raise everything else to match?
