Dear all,
There is need to put in place a Civil Society Network on TB. in Nigeria. Meanwhile ebonyi state of Nigeria has put in place her own state network on TB. waiting for other states to do same to enable us hold a national meeting to inaugurate the national chapter.
waiting for all your inputs for the way forward.

Thank you all.
SINCERELY YOURS,
UGORJI udensi

Dear All,

I think I agree with the call to form a network to meet TB challenges in Nigeria.

I will appreciate if the call is not necesitated to the fact that there is funding available for TB HIV and Malaria now.

I think it will be appropriate if we address issues with due process... first by identifying organisations who have the capacity, passion and commitment beyond funds, organisations should design strategies to build or strengthen capacities first and when this is done there can be alliances and coalitions with common force to mitigate the impact of TB.
Let us see TB as a major Health and Developmental issue and do little things we can without funding so that even when funding comes, it will only boost our scope and coverage and when it goes, the organization will still be able to sustain itself.

Ebonyi State! You do well. We go emulate you soon! But first thinghs first. How many NGOs understand the issues around TB?

I use this medium to call on potential funders/donors to identify organizational capacity gaps and build or strengthen the identify gaps in CSOs. Then we can harness our resources for a common good.

This is just my opinion.

Dear Ugorji and Martin-Mary,

Thanks for your contributions.

I agree with you that the need for a national coalition of CSOs
working on TB in Nigeria is long overdue. Efforts have been on, since
April last year, to facilitate the process of establishing one in
Nigeria. I agree with Martin-Mary that the establishment of the
coalition should not be pushed by the expectation of funding being
available for AIDS, TB and Malaria.

The process of establishing the coalition was started by ENHANSE, with
the cooperation of WHO and the NTBLCP. A National Steering Committee
was established with the mandate of midwifing the coalition.

The Steering Committee has held several meetings towards achieving its
mandate. Part of the achievements of the coalition is the development
of a Draft Constitution while the registration of the coalition with
the CAC is in progress.

One of the strategies of the National Steering Committee is to
identify CSOs working on TB or interested in working on TB towards
identifying capacity gaps, building their capacities and encouraging
them to work effectively towards giving civil society a voice on TB in
Nigeria. This is why many of you were invited to the TB/HIV Advocacy
workshop held at the Parkview Hotel, Wuse last year.

Many states have already taken the steps taken by Ebonyi. This is
laudable but I wish to sound a note of caution that the establishment
of State Chapters of the coalition should not be "transformation" of
HIV CSOs into "TB Contractors" just because of expectations of
funding.

The experience in Lagos is that HUDPHI, headed by Dr. Oni Idigbe is
facilitating the formation of the coalition in the state through
meetings and capacity building sessions. Other states can take a cue
from this initiative by organizing seminars during their meetings.
There are some of us who can volunteer our time and technical skills
along this direction. For people like myself, Mayowa Joel, Olayide
Akanni, Gloria Nwagboniwe, etc who have been working on TB at
community, national and global levels over time, we would be glad to
share the knowledge with our colleagues in the states. We can work
this out whenever we are needed.

I also wish to intimate us with the fact that we would be glad if
other states that have established state networks kindly inform the
National Steering Committee of the development (including the minutes
of their meeting and list of officers). This would help us in
identifying who to contact when we have meetings and events on TB. We
are also planning to have series of coalition-building, networking and
capacity-building activities planned for this year in which we would
like to involve them. You may also inform us about such developments
from other states that you are aware of.

You may notify me (as the Secretary of the National Steering
Committee) of the Chairman of the National Steering Committee, Dr.
David Olayemi by email on obatu...@gmail.com or olay...@yahoo.nz
respectively.

We look forward to working with you all as we mobilize greater
community leadership in our response to TB in our communities, at
national levels and the world at large.

Best regards,

Obatunde Oladapo

Oba,
These developments are telling us that we have taken too much time dilly dallying on the issue of registration and so on. I think we should be thinking of a meeting before the end of this month as earlier suggested. Think about it and let me know what you think.

Dear Oba
I thank God for lefting us 2009 to 2010. I also thank God for people you whom God have given wisdom to work with men. Regarding the CSO working on TB, I agree with you that the is a need for a national coalition of cso working TB in Nigeria. In Taraba state UNICEF TB Leprocy report 2008 indicate that the Taraba  state have TB prevelence of 35%; therefore the is a need for this colalition. I will be happy to have the draft constitution.

thank you.
