Hi localizers, As hinted in a previous message, we are currently working on improving the experience in Firefox for multilingual users. That includes, among other things: 1) Adding a language switcher in Preferences to switch to another language that is already available on the system (i.e. already installed as a language pack). 2) Adding UI to preferences to manage basic interaction with dictionaries. 3) Add the ability, on release, to install a new language directly from Preferences (it would download, install and enable a language pack from AMO). As part of #3, we also want to install dictionaries for that language. For example: user chooses to install Italian on an English build, the system will download the language pack and also install the Italian dictionary. In order to do that, we need a curated list of dictionaries that will be installed with each locale, and we need your help and feedback to make sure that list is meaningful and provides a good experience. Here's the first version of this list: https://mozilla-l10n.github.io/firefox-dictionaries/ You can also see the complete list of dictionaries available on AMO: https://mozilla-l10n.github.io/firefox-dictionaries/complete.html This list was created by: * Picking one dictionary when language has more than one available, usually looking at the number of users on AMO. The complete list provide a list of such locales. * Verifying that the dictionary can be installed. Ideally, there should be only one dictionary per language, but there can be exceptions. For example, the current list would also install de-CH and de-AT for German. Here's the *help we need from you*: * Install the dictionary currently suggested for your language, and check that it provides a good experience. If that's not the case, we should remove it. * Determine if you need more than one dictionary, and why that's the case. You can provide feedback by replying in this email thread, or in the tracking bug https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1481375 Note that this list will keep receiving updates in the future, for example if a new dictionary become available, or if we start shipping a new locale. Hi Richard,
I have started to work on porting the quick locale switcher to Thunderbird 60 - it's a bit flaky.
In order to add supported locales, you need to browse to:
https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/thunderbird/releases/60.0/win32/xpi/
(replace version number & platform accordingly)
and then drag the locale into the Languages Pane on Add-ons
Manager.
It would be cool if we could automate that process somehow (or
at least open a content tab in the correct ftp folder) - I think
writing an Add-on "Add Language" for this purpose should be
relatively simple. One thing I find when I am testing different
Thunderbird version is that I constantly need to reinstall
compatible xpis, it would be nice if there was an "update /
replace locale" command for existing entries.

Hi Mihovil
I'm planning to port bug 1469684 to TB (point 1 below) but to test this I'd need other locales. Is somewhere a guidance how I could get multiple locales in TB?

Hello all,
Bellow you can find yesterdays email on dev-l10n for Firefox.
Does Thunderbird plan to enable some kind of locale switch?
I'm asking because for Croatia, around 47% of users are using en-us locale, 44% is using hr and rest is using different languages.
A lot of those en-us users are using it because they don't know hr locale exist. What happens usually is IT guys have their OS language to en-us since everything in IT is connected to it and when they go to download, it offers en-us version to them.
Would be nice if Thunderbird installs automaticaly with en-us and hr language for croatian users and offers them choice of language for user interface.
Best regards,
Mihovil

I've been using for years (until TB 58) the excellent "Simple Locale
Switcher" add-on to change locales between French, German and English (US)
<https://addons.thunderbird.net/en-us/thunderbird/addon/simple-locale-switcher/>
<https://github.com/nohamelin/simple-locale-switcher/issues>
This add-on allowed to fetch and install language packs (it still does
in TB 60) and change the locale with one click and restart (which it no
longer does in TB 60).
The author of this add-on yesterday posted in the MozillaZine forum that
the update of his add-on would be completed during the next weeks but he
has very little time to work on it:

Hello Mihovil,
It would be nice if the ATN (Add-ons @ Thunderbird.net) would
also have a Croatian locale, i.e.
https://addons.thunderbird.net/hr/thunderbird/
For example, an add-on which has been translated into Croatian is CardBook; however the add-on page:
https://addons.thunderbird.net/hr/thunderbird/addon/cardbook/
doesn't exist and redirects.
Once the 'hr' locale is available add-ons page could also be translated into Croatian, like these languages:
https://addons.thunderbird.net/cs/thunderbird/addon/cardbook/
https://addons.thunderbird.net/da/thunderbird/addon/cardbook/
https://addons.thunderbird.net/de/thunderbird/addon/cardbook/
https://addons.thunderbird.net/de/thunderbird/addon/cardbook/
https://addons.thunderbird.net/es/thunderbird/addon/cardbook/
https://addons.thunderbird.net/hu/thunderbird/addon/cardbook/
https://addons.thunderbird.net/id/thunderbird/addon/cardbook/
https://addons.thunderbird.net/it/thunderbird/addon/cardbook/
https://addons.thunderbird.net/ja/thunderbird/addon/cardbook/
https://addons.thunderbird.net/ko/thunderbird/addon/cardbook/
https://addons.thunderbird.net/nl/thunderbird/addon/cardbook/
https://addons.thunderbird.net/pl/thunderbird/addon/cardbook/
https://addons.thunderbird.net/pt-PT/thunderbird/addon/cardbook/
https://addons.thunderbird.net/ro/thunderbird/addon/cardbook/
https://addons.thunderbird.net/ru/thunderbird/addon/cardbook/
https://addons.thunderbird.net/sl/thunderbird/addon/cardbook/
https://addons.thunderbird.net/sv-SE/thunderbird/addon/cardbook/
https://addons.thunderbird.net/uk/thunderbird/addon/cardbook/
https://addons.thunderbird.net/vi/thunderbird/addon/cardbook/
This could also help more Croatian's benefit from Thunderbird.
What do you think?
Thank you
Óvári
Hello,
Where is that translated?
I don't see Thunderbird addons in Ponton.
Could it be related to
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1479377 ?
