he explains that some of these books (private and "public area) are
strictly knowledge and would prefer you read or copy them here while
others from his private collection have magical effects and he is
willing to let you take up to half of those that he has.

Knowledge books (some private, others in the main stacks):
Schmeldric's notes
Pre-ancient histories
Pre-ancient languages
Pre-ancient craft books (Arms, Armor, Architecture, mechanics, travel)

More to come...

Slight re-write/clarification on numbers from above: You can do as
much "mundane" reading as you manage to fit in before he moves the
library.
Additionally he is willing to let up to 16 of his magical books go...

Magic books:
<Stat> +3 (one of each)
<Stat> +5 (one of each)
Boccob's blessed Book equivalent with some "old spells" that might be
able to be deciphered.
Book of infinite spells equivalent
Book of translations (a magical language translation book)
Book of paintings (a book of unpainted pictures drawn in ink that when
painted become real for a time. Real forever if painted with magical
paints.)
<Fighter level book>
<Rogue level book>
<Evil Cleric level book>
<Neutral Cleric level book>
<GoodCleric level book>
<magic user level book>
Manuals of golems:
Corpse
Leather
Wood
Flesh
Clay
Stone
Iron
Emotion (Love, hate, pity, remorse)
Greater Stone
Greater Iron
Vacous Grimoire equivalent

then there is another book in that group that would count against the
16. It is not inherently detectable as magic. It's title reads:
"Knowledge of the terrors of the other side."

[Out-of-character stuff]

I forget how the old Cleric level books work. Do they function for
all divine spellcasters of the right alignment, or just straight-up
Clerics?

Can we look through the book of paintings before claiming it? And
does creating something with the book confer any sort of control over
whatever you've painted?

What's a Love Golem? No, I suppose it really doesn't matter. We're
making one.

Are we allowed to bring other people to the library?

Tirris would be interested in whatever book it was we talked about the
other day (I think the Arcane caster one?), and would also likely
volunteer for the Knowledge of the Terrors of the Other Side if no-one
else had the Intestinal Fortitude(tm) to read it.

Books aside, I got a question for ya, Denib. Or for your trees;
really, whichever wants ta answer.

The trees were talkin' earlier about feedin' us to their saplings, but
I ain't actually seen any saplings. Was that just the same kinda
bluster what we was blusterin', or are they around here somewhere?
'Cuz, well, it's kinda my reason for bein' ta help protect Nymph
groves, and, free time bein' what it is, I've been doin' a pretty poor
job of it so far. I'm thinkin' that one o' them saplings per grove
might do a pretty swell job of protectin'.

So, here's what I got ta offer: we've come across this magic jug of
Geshtai, what which makes plants watered by it grow much faster an'
stronger than they normally would. So, would there be any saplings or
germinated seeds available to transplant ta be grove guardians in
exchange fer regular waterin's with our magic jug?

-He explains in a low, breathy, rasping voice-
My trees have not been trees in more than appearance for a long time.
They were originally a hybrid of many plant that i was combining for
asthetic reasons and so that little maintenance would be required to
maintain them. then in later experiments I started making them 'self
maintaining.' and then finally i evolved them to the point that they
maintained the courtyard of the library and in the absense of
caretakers, the library itself.

Today they are more closely related to golems than plants. But they
still retain some of their plant heritage and they still see
themselves as trees. They still can produce fruit, leaves and seeds,
but none of it grows. perhaps they were getting creative as of late
in there attempts to get some of them to grow. I would not be against
you trying your experiment, nor I'll wager would the tree-guardians as
they seem to have been trying to grow more of themselves for quite
some time. Search the recently tilled soils outside for anything that
could be a seed.
When these guardians were still mostly plant, they could produce many
types of fruit and seed.

Huh, good plan, Dargon! Now, if only we knew whether I would survive
reading the darkest secrets of the most forgotten ancient reaches of
evil!

Yeah, that's kinda somethin' that we should talk about. Well, not
"kinda."

Do we really NEED knowledge of the terrors from the other side? An'
maybe we should learn more about this book what before we have it
count against the 16 that we're checking out. I mean, it's really
old. It could be written by some guy back before they had airships
and good boats, and he's just talking about how scary it is across the
ocean. I bet you'd feel pretty foolish, having passed up an old magic
book for that!

I mean, I suppose that I can't, in good conscience, try to convince
you to not take a risk like this. But maybe we should ask Denib about
it, first. Hey, Denib: what's the deal with that book?
