Panther Families,
As we returned to school this morning, I had the opportunity to connect with staff and share my deep appreciation for something we often take for granted, stable Wi-Fi. Moments like these remind us how critical different roles are in our system, especially when something isn’t working. I am incredibly grateful for the work of our technology team in getting us back up and running. Thank you, as well, to everyone for your patience as we navigated through this unusual situation.
Thank you also for sharing your thoughts in last week’s pulse check. There was strong recognition of effective communication, helpful updates from teachers, and a deep appreciation for the ways staff continue to support students. The responsiveness and collaboration across our team does not go unnoticed.
We also received feedback regarding teacher absences and student supervision in the B200 Pod. When a teacher is gone, for most classes students report to the Pod, scan in for attendance, and then transition to a designated area where supervision is available and support is provided as questions arise. As students get settled and open up their Schoology account, they can see the lesson that has been created digitally from their teacher to work on. The rest of their class is around, so they can use each other for questions and support.
In the pulse check, there were questions about placing substitutes directly in classrooms when teachers are out. Two primary challenges impact this:
- There is a limited pool of available substitutes. If anyone you know would like to become a sub, send them our way. Some classrooms are prioritized for subs due to specialized needs or required materials.
- We have found that substitutes often do not have the content-specific expertise needed to effectively teach new material. As a result, teachers typically leave instructions in Schoology to ensure learning continues on the specific topic.
In this current approach, we are able to have supervision and address both of these challenges. I appreciate the questions.
Spring sports are well underway. You’ll see our softball and baseball fields busy, the track full of athletes, and the tennis courts in constant use. Spring is here, and with it comes a renewed energy. There’s something special about seeing students outside, active, and enjoying the season.
Proud to be a Panther,
Megan Jahnke

Earth Science Investigators
High school students are taking science outdoors, using sticks and shadows to track the sun’s movement and compare how the shadows change over the course of the day. By observing patterns, they’re using real data to explore and support Galileo's heliocentric model of our solar system.

Learning That Goes to Work
Chase Warner just landed a full-time plumbing job he’ll start after he graduates this spring. He did all the things he learned about in his Career Seminar class at Spring Lake Park High School to get the job. Application. Resume. Cover letter. Interviews. The class is just one way students are finding their paths and gaining workforce skills.
The hiring manager Chase interviewed with told him somebody came in the week before and handwrote their resume. It was all scribbling, and he couldn’t read it. He told Chase, ‘That was already just not a good look. We’re not hiring that guy.’ He complimented Chase on his resume and cover letter before telling him he’d like to interview him and move forward.
“That was huge,” says Chase.
Career Seminar is the new name for a course that has been called Work-Based Learning for many years. Students taking the 12-week trimester-long course learn about different career paths, create resumes and cover letters, practice interviewing, review hiring paperwork, and more. It covers all the practicalities of getting, having and even leaving a job. There is also an opportunity to get elective credits for hours spent working a job outside of school.
The course is open to all juniors and seniors. It’s a good option for students to creatively earn elective credits and for students who want to explore different careers and the in’s and out of having a job. Read more about how learning is going to work.
