Panther Families,
I was in an English Language Arts class this week. Students were analyzing how writers use language to make readers think and feel. They examined a short story, selected specific language that helped them identify emotions and then analyzed how those choices shaped the setting. From there, they discussed how strong writers intentionally create feelings in readers and how they can apply those same techniques in their own writing. Students were clearly able to explain why they were thinking and feeling what they were, which is an important literacy skill.
As a reminder, this is the end of a short week for students. There is no school tomorrow, Thursday, February 12 through Monday, February 16. We look forward to welcoming students back on Tuesday, February 17.
Before enjoying a long weekend, I hope to see many of you at tonight’s Explore Your Options event at the high school 4–7 p.m. As we wrap up this year’s registration season, I hope you are finding the information helpful as you make course decisions for next school year. Registration closes this Friday. Please be sure to visit the registration hub for materials and reach out to your student’s counselor with any questions.
Drop-in conferences are also tonight from 4-7 p.m. at the high school. Stop by to explore options and chat with teachers about your student's progress all in one evening!
And finally - girls hockey, girls hockey, girls hockey! Our SLP/Centennial girls hockey team is playing in the section finals on Friday night at 7 p.m. They are a phenomenal group of young women. Come watch them glide with us and show your support.
Have a great end of week and weekend!
Proud to be a Panther,
Megan Jahnke

Sharp pencils. Blank paper. Big Ideas.
The second grade pencil sharpener is busy. Every few minutes another student gets up to use it. Second grade writing is serious business. Today, students are writing a paragraph. A chart paper at the front of the room reminds students of what this paragraph should include - topic sentence, three pieces of evidence, conclusion. They’re also paying attention to vocabulary words, transition words and punctuation. It’s a lot to think about.
Every elementary student in Spring Lake Park Schools will spend a lot of time at school today writing. Journaling. Informative writing. Narratives. Creative writing. Note-taking. Research. Skills elementary students will need in coming years are built step by step. With each pencil scratch and key stroke, the foundation is being laid for the future. Read the story about elementary writing.
