Panther Families,
I want to share how deeply grateful we are at the high school for the incredible support from our community. We have experienced a tremendous outreach from families and staff—people being present, showing up outside of school, and helping ensure our students have what they need to be successful both inside and outside the classroom. That support matters, and it is felt.
Today, I spent time in a math classroom where students were simplifying equations with positive and negative exponents. What stood out wasn’t just the math—it was the problem-solving. Students were building thinking skills, learning to manipulate variables, and working through challenges to create solutions. This kind of learning reflects the deep work happening every day in our classrooms.
Please don’t miss an important opportunity coming up for families. Our Explore Your Options event for current 8–11 grade students and families will take place next Wednesday, February 11, 4-7 p.m. at the high school. This event offers a more personalized, one-on-one approach with teachers to discuss course options and sequencing based on where students are now and where they want to go. While conversations with counselors are essential as students register for next year, this is a valuable chance to connect directly with teachers who can help guide next steps for individual needs. Conferences will also be held the same evening, 4-7 p.m., allowing families to take advantage of both opportunities in one visit to school.
Over the past few weeks, we have had many families and community members express their gratitude for staff being present around the school at the start and end of each day. All of the support reinforces our commitment to keeping our school a safe place where all students are welcomed, valued, and belong. I am grateful for the uplifting and positive messages I have had the privilege to share with our staff.
Thank you for the support to continue to build amazing schools for students and our community.
Proud to be a Panther,
Megan Jahnke

Support for students and families: How to access, how to help
The ongoing presence of ICE in our communities continues to place immense strain on members of our school community. In a message sent yesterday, Superintendent Ronneberg shared how this has impacted the educational experience for many students and our staff. Our schools continue to focus on maintaining connections with each of our students and providing support for continued
learning.
At the district, school and community level, we're also working to coordinate support for a variety of needs – including basic living needs, mental health supports and more. There are many, many volunteers that have stepped forward to dedicate time and resources to support students and families.
Access supports
If you are a family that needs support and is not already connected, reach out to your school's main office or PantherC...@district16.org. Social workers, counselors and student and family advocates continue to be primary connectors. They are proactively reaching out to families with students absent from school and connecting them to resources that meet each family's specific
needs.
Support includes academic support for the continuation of learning, basic living needs and mental health resources. We are coordinating connections to both school-led supports and community-led supports to meet basic needs. There are community resources accessible to all members of the community that are good to be aware of:
How to help
For people who want to directly support Spring Lake Park Schools' students and families, you can:
- Donate to the Panther Pantry. The Panther Pantry, supported through the Panther Foundation, continues to provide food and household items. The pantry accepts monetary donations as well as food and household items. See this week’s list of high demand items. We will update this list each week to reflect the most urgent needs. Many thanks to generous donations through school food drives over the last few weeks. Items are moving quickly to those who need them through district coordination efforts and many volunteers.
- Donate food or funding to the food shelf. Our local food shelves are struggling to keep up with demand and recent funding cuts. Donations to SACA Food Shelf, the ACBC Food Shelf and Hope for the Community meet critical needs for students and families including providing fresh food each week to augment what we are able to provide through the Panther Pantry.
- Connect to volunteer opportunities: Contact PantherC...@district16.org to inquire about and be connected to specific volunteer opportunities for efforts led by our schools or to get connected to other community-led volunteer and fundraising activities.
The network of support continues to evolve as the dynamics in our community change.

From Paper to Play: Inside Epic Game Design at Westwood
Walk into Westwood’s Epic Game Design classroom and you’ll find students collaborating, creating and problem-solving through hands-on projects that blend coding, art and design. Offered in grades 7–8, Epic helps students build creativity, teamwork and communication skills while exploring future Career and College Pathways in Technology, Engineering and Design at Spring Lake Park High School.
Recently, Epic 8 students took on the “No-Board” Game Design Challenge - designing fully playable games in one class period using only paper and simple supplies. Working in team roles like Builder, Rule Writer and Tester, students created original games while learning how to share ideas, give feedback and improve their designs. Experiences like this help students develop real-world skills that go far beyond gaming. Read the full story.
