Scholarships are available for UNCTAD online course on trade and gender (19 February-8 March 2015) - Applications deadline: 1 December 2014
The UNCTAD Virtual Institute, the academic cooperation programme of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), together with UNCTAD's Trade, Gender and
Development Section, invite academics, policymakers and representatives of civil society in developing and transition countries to apply for participation in their online course on trade and gender, scheduled for 19 February-8 March 2014.
The objective of the course is to enhance the understanding of the interaction between trade and gender and their link to countries' inclusive development strategies, and to
provide participants with knowledge and skills for the design and implementation of gender-aware trade and development policies corresponding to the needs and interests of their countries.
The content and timetable of the course are in the attached prospectus.
Applicants must hold a Master's degree in Economics, Law, Political Science or related area, and have an excellent knowledge of English. They should also be able to allocate
an average of 10-12 hours per week to the course. Qualified women candidates and candidates from sub-Saharan Africa and the least developed countries are particularly encouraged to apply.
Thanks to support from the Government of Finland, the selected participants will be exempt from the fees associated with access to the course and e-tutoring services provided.
They will also receive the course DVD free-of-charge.
Top course graduates will become part of the UNCTAD trade and gender consultancy roster, and may be considered for future assignments in this area and/or participation in intergovernmental
meetings on trade and gender organized by UNCTAD.
Top course graduates from academic institutions in the least developed and lower-income countries of sub-Saharan Africa, who hold a Master's degree in Economics and possess
knowledge of statistics/econometrics and the basics of the statistical software Stata, will be considered for participation in a follow-up five-day regional workshop on trade and gender. This workshop, building on the online course, will focus on the use of
quantitative methods in trade and gender analysis. Successful participants of the workshop will subsequently be able to apply for financial support and mentoring in the development of papers on trade and gender issues of policy relevance to their countries.
