Baseline code is provided in the official Condensed Movies Challenge Repository. This repository contains the code for attaining baseline results for the validation and test partitions of the dataset, using the Mixture-of-Embeddings-Experts retrieval method. This repository also contains the code for generating the results files for submitting to the CodaLab servers.

For each entry into the challenge, we measure the performance of the retrieval system. The performance measure used is the geometric mean. In detail, for an evaluation set with N samples, for each sample we compute:

Validation: ground truth correspondences between videos and descriptions are provided to participants. Evaluation code is available here for evaluating retrieval performance. Test: The ground truth correspondences between videos and descriptions for the test set are hidden. Retrieval results are submitted to the public CodaLab server. Details on how to prepare submission results can be found on the CodaLab and Github pages.

I started tracking my movie watching after I heard a random comment on the /Filmcast. I could not tell you what episode it was on or who said it but it was a comment in relation to how many movies film critics watch in a given year. So that got me thinking and wondering how many I watch. That day I created a list on IMDB.com and started adding movies as I watched them. At some point I found Letterboxd and it was a match made in heaven. I even moved over my IMDB watch diary to Letterboxd.

This website was built as an archive for my journey in 2019. When 2020 rolled around and the challenge was over it felt very anticlimactic. I needed a way to wrap this whole thing up. I wanted to make sure that this crazy thing I did did not just disappear into the ether. I wanted some record of what I did and how I did it.

Along with the website I am creating a video retrospective that will live here on this site. Of course, I am still watching movies so I will use this website to capture my film diary going forward as well and highlight film related videos I find online. This site is by no means a film news site even though I may get on my soap box and provide commentary and opinion from time to time.

What is the Spring Film Challenge? It is annual film festival event modeled on the Virginia Film Festival challenge in which participants are given a set of 'challenge items' (for instance, a required theme and prop), after which they have a short period of time to create and submit an original short film. See category descriptions below for examples!

IMPORTANT: Check out the updated Spring Film Challenge OFFICIAL GUIDELINES. All films must feature original video, no stock footage. See below for filmmaking resources and a short 'getting started' video.' Please direct questions to ci...@radford.edu.

McConnell Library - students can checkout camcorders, tripods, DSLR cameras, and audio recorders. The default period is three days, and it's a good idea to make a reservation in advance. You might also consider spending some time with the camera you'll be using before you check it out to shoot your movie.

CITL - on the second floor McConnell Library. If you need to speak with someone about questions you have or how to do something regarding cameras or equipment, media, editing, etc., or if you need access to a computer for editing, then this is the place. Email ci...@radford.edu with general questions, or to set up an appointment with one of our staff, or to make a reservation to use a video editing station or learn more about video software.

CITL Studio One - also in the CITL, this is a small audio and video production space for producing voice work, green/black/white screen video, audio and video presentations, VR gaming and other related activities. Training and appointments necessary. Email ci...@radford.edu to find out more.

- To stabilize certain shots, you place your elbows on a table to take the photo, or even put the phone in selfie mode and lean it against a vase, stack of books, etc.
- Make sure you have adequate lighting.
- Avoid pointing the camera at a light source such as a window, lightbulb, sun, etc.

Audacity - a really great, freeware audio editor for Windows or Mac. Good for recording voice, mixing multiple tracks together, special audio effects. etc. Click link to download. If you need help getting started, download the Audacity quick reference.

For Film Photography Day this year we connected pairs of Lomographers living in the same regions to take part in a film swap. Each individual brought their own style and creative ideas to the experiment, and with a sprinkle of luck, (and perhaps a quick prayer to the film gods) voila! The outcome is a plethora of beautiful double exposures.

Since I usually shoot vertically, I debated myself whether I should shoot vertically or horizontally. I really wanted to shoot vertically, but I decided to go horizontal to keep good balance. As I was shooting, I got myself thinking about a lot of technical things such as exposure. But, at the end of the day, the best way to do film swap is just have fun and not think too much about the other photographer.

The most challenging part is getting the perfect timing between the two frames that will overlap each other. If the first layer is too bright it will affect the second layer which will leave less film space as well.

Here are my tips for any newbies:
1. Choose a low ISO film, you can more adjust the camera setting.
2. Set your camera's ISO setting at least 2x higher than the ISO on film. The resulting image will be in low light, this will give enough shooting area for the 2nd layer.
3. Avoid taking photos with very white tones or in a very bright outdoor area.
4. Let's take a picture. "Ignore all the rules"

Doo Film: I was interested in taking part in this project because I had never done film swapping before and I thought, how lucky I am if I can get a good experience without the cost of a roll of film.

I didn't know what my film swap's partner would shoot as scenes, location, object etc. so I prayed we could create good photos. I'm very satisfied with my first time experience and I will try to do it again.

Film photos can be taken whenever I want to capture them or hold a camera, but film swaps are not made by myself, so it was hard to figure out what kind of pictures to take, and I was more confused because I was not sure about the results.

It was fascinating to see a different result when the mysterious picture was added to the other picture. It was an opportunity to feel the special charm of film swap. Finally, it was a very meaningful to participate in the film swap project of 2022. I had a different experience that I had never had before while taking photos alone, and I think this result will remain a precious picture.

Lee Suyoung: I recently came across multi-exposure photography, and I was actually a little afraid to try it right away. I didn't know how to do it, and I was hesitant because I didn't know what to include.

At that moment, I discovered a great opportunity called film swap, and I was very excited to learn and understand multiple exposures, and to be able to make one piece of work with someone I didn't know at all. Of course, there is no way to know what the previous shooter would have captured even after repeated considerations, so the most difficult part was taking pictures and not getting a sense of how the results would come out. But in the end, I was able to take pictures one by one, fluttering at the thought that one or two good pictures would eventually be a moment of coincidence, like fate.

When I received the results, the most disappointing thing was that I had the wrong starting point ... The two shots were slightly out of line. However, as an extension of the opportunity that led me to participate in this film swap, I was able to feel great excitement just by looking into the life of a fellow photographer and seeing images where that life overlapped with my life. In addition to this, some of the photos have a strangely harmonious feeling, so I think it was a very good experience.

The challenge was lack of time. That was I feel particularly due to postal / logistical issue across the globe at present. That said, there is a certain discipline in having to use a roll of film in a given amount of time.

Jake Robertson: I chose to be part of the film swap so I could experience a completely different type of photography I have never tested before, and not shooting photos with someone I know makes it very unbiased and experimental

Congrats everyone on a successful film swap project! The photos are AMAZING and super fun. I love doubles and I also really enjoy swapping film with other lomographers and this article just gave me a giant grin today. Thanks for that!

Other best-picture nominees included the ironically named Atonement, in which an attempted act of reparation is exposed as narcissistic self-deception, and the handsome but shallow Michael Clayton. Rounding out the five was the only one I liked, the dark horse Juno, a crass but life-affirming comedy about a pregnant teen who changes her mind about aborting her baby and decides to give it up for adoption instead.

There was some good news. Ratatouille won animated film (and was nominated for more awards than any cartoon in history). Juno won original screenplay, and The Bourne Ultimatum won three awards. Those three were among the films I most admired last year. Still, many of the top awards and nominations went to films that underscore the moral distance between Hollywood and my own perspective.

I point this out, not by way of critique, but simply to highlight that sensibilities among committed Catholics and other Christians as to what is appropriate for both children and adults differ greatly, and the same people can find one another too rigorous in some respects and too lax in others.
