Got divorced in June. Up to this point, we always had filed married
jointly, I just changed my status with the IRS and GA state to single.
Now, when I file my 1040 as indiv single next year (ie tax year 2005),
will I owe taxes for the whole year 2004 as single? IE, for tax
purposes, will I be considered single for the whole year 2005 or only
from now on? Seeing that my taxes increased by 400 a month due to the
fact of having changed to single, I am afraid that I may owe those 400
a month for the first half of the year as well (ie, owe 400x6
(Jan-Jun), another $2400).

Now my status is single, no exemption, plus addtl $50 withheld for
federal from each paycheck.

turbotax help mentioned something that made me concerned:

'divorced persons.
If your are divorced under a final decree by the last day of the year,
you are considered unmarried for the whole year and you cannot choose
married filing jointly as your filing status..'

Well, last part makes sense but I am concerned about the 'you are
considered unmarried for the whole year'.

thanks

According to the tax law your married status if the same as the legal
status of your home state. So, if you were legally divorced on or
before the last day of the year then you are considered single for the
entire year. You may in fact owe taxes as a result of your change in
tax status.
