Subject: The 6% Problem: Why NYC Residents Need to Watch Iowa’s Tax Battle
Hi taxpayers and representatives,
While Iowa is debating a 2% cap on local government revenue growth, New York City is moving in the exact opposite direction.
Recent reports show that New York City’s budget is climbing at a rate of 6%—triple the cap being proposed in Iowa. While Iowa lawmakers are fighting to put a "hard ceiling" on spending to protect taxpayers, NYC’s spending continues to outpace both inflation and the average New Yorker's paycheck.
The contrast between these two approaches couldn’t be sharper:
The Iowa Proposal: A strict 2% revenue growth cap intended to force local governments to prioritize essential spending and stop "tax creep" caused by rising property assessments.
The NYC Reality: A 6% budget increase driven by rising operational costs and expanding programs. Critics warn this rate is unsustainable and will eventually necessitate even higher property tax levies to fill the gap.
If Iowa—a state with a much lower cost of living—is recognizes that 2% is the limit for sustainable growth, why is New York City comfortable with 6%?
As property owners, we are the ones who ultimately fund this expansion. Without a serious conversation about spending caps similar to those being debated in Iowa, New York residents face a future of perpetual tax hikes just to keep up with City Hall’s "new normal."
Demand a Cap: Contact your City Council member and State representatives. Ask them why New York isn't considering the same 2% growth protections currently on the table in Iowa.
Audit the Spending: Review the latest NYC Budget reports and speak out against non-essential spending increases during the next public hearing.
Spread the Word: Share this comparison with neighbors. Most people don't realize our budget is growing at three times the rate other states consider "safe."

We deserve a city that is safe and well-run, but we also deserve a city we can actually afford to live in.

Ralph
