I just received an email letting me know that Unlimitel's been acquired by Primus, and I wanted to pass along my congratulations to Stephan.

I am worried, however, about the personalized level of service diminishing. Unlimitel's been a great provider for hobbyist and small PBX operators like myself and I'm not so sure Primus will be so helpful or tolerant.

Here's the full announcement.

I have my concerns too. Big corporations dismiss the smaller guys as "not
their core business" and tend to jack up the prices to "reflect the true
cost of doing business". Perhaps Stephan could assure us that there will be
no minimum usage or higher monthly line charges.

I share his concerns a bit, Unlimitel has focused on providing
affordable and innovative solutions at better than PSTN rates. Primus is
more of a marketing machine that sells stuff at the highest rates they
can get away with. I'm sure someone else will step in though if they
create a vacuum in services.

Henry,

I can understand your fear about this acquisition. As our business kept growing, I was running thin on supporting the network and our customers. This acquisition will help Unlimitel with more resources to help support and maintaining our network. You can still send your support questions to our ticketing system and your request will be assigned to the right person for resolution.

Primus loves our prepaid VoIP business model and it is a good addition to their existing offerings to customers. They have no intention to change anything and prices will remain the same. By combining our networks, we will see some expansion and we will be adding more cities to our networks in the near future.

We were already using Primus internet and colocation facilities for the past 14 years and this was one of the reason why we had such good voice quality on the VoIP side of the calls.

As for myself (Stephan Monette) I remain on board and I will still manage the whole Unlimitel business for Primus but with a lot more resources to help continue to grow the business.

At the end, our customers get longer customer support hours, 24/7 staff to monitor and maintain our network and you can still contact me with your questions.

Now that I will have more time on my hands, I will be coming to our TAUG meetings more often and hope to meet everyone.

Thanks,

Stephan Monette

I too echo these concerns. I've been so happy to deal with the folks at
Unlimitel - Primus just scares me! (ie their reaction and billing before
Bell's UBB fiasco).

Is there decent local alternatives in case I need to "jump ship"....

/M

I have zero concerns. I met with both Stephan and AJ last week, and
after that meeting I'm feeling better than ever about the continued
level of service I'll be getting from Unlimitel. Stephan will be
staying on with Primus, and will have a team of people working with
him, instead of poor old Stephan doing it all by himself. (Up to this
point I was starting to assume he was a robot based on responses I
would get from him at either 7:00am or 9:00pm.)

Because of the added team that Stephan will be leading, I'm expecting
better server rather than diminished service, which is almost hard to
believe is attainable. However past experience with Stephan has led me
to believe I'll continue to receive nothing but an exceptional
customer service experience.

I for one welcome my new Primus overlords!

Leif.

I've tried several, and haven't found anything else I trusted.
