Any suggestion on a good replacement for a WRT54 series that can handle SIP - these seem to have been replaced by
other routers making them hard to find. Any small 4 port will do (but not Dlink):)

Henry,
I have great success with the Linksys WRT54GL. I normally replace the
firmware with Tomato. Canada Computers have lots of them in stock.

Thank you.

Yes the WRT54 series is in the process of being discontinued. So far the
WRT54GL is still being manufactured but not for long.

The good news is, the WRT160NL is the replacement and (according to
Linksys) it can be flashed with new firmware. I don't have one yet so I
haven't been able to test it with tomato.

Thanks John, when you get one of these new routers could you do a review for us ?

I know there are many TAUG members who love the WRT54 router (as I do) and would be interested in
the latest and greatest product.

I have successfully flashed a couple of WRT160N's (not NL) with DD-WRT. They've been running for a few months now without any issues.

Performance seems better than the WRT54GL (it's got a 300MHz CPU). Another plus is wireless N support.

Other than the price ($150+) there isn't really anything I can say the WRT54GL was better.

For a cheaper DD-WRT solution, you can use WRT54G2 which can be
flashed with the micro build of DD-WRT.

I am using ASUS WL-520GU's with DD-WRT for a mesh hotspot network with success. They are cheap and run faster than the Linksys.

I'll second the ASUS WL-520GU is a good replacement for the WRT54. I've
been using it with Tomato for QoS in several places without any issue.

It also makes for a good Wifi radio,

I'm reviving this ancient thread (2009!) because this just published
article on the WRT54GL (clearly the best "home" router/firewall ever made)
reminded me of it. I guess I was wrong when I said it won't be manufactured
for much longer....
