Те, кто первый раз организует, ищет переводчика подешевле, лучше
вообще бесплатно. Если мероприятие не однодневное, то в ходе первого
дня организатор понимает ошибку и начинает звонить в переводческие
бюро или знакомым, кто может порекомендовать профессиональных
переводчиков.
Организации с опытом проведения регулярных мероприятий - таких в
Казани пока не так много - ведут свою базу переводчиков и каждый раз
отдают приоритет лучшим из уже проверенных.
Свежая кровь появляется через сопровождение гостей (обычно
волонтерство) с хорошим уровнем перевода.
В случае серьезных организаторов (за деньги) - когда проверенные ими
специалисты заняты или бюджет почему-то не позволяет, но тут уровень
ожиданий по качеству другой как языка и перевода (см. в предыдущем
сообщении), так и общей и тематической начитанности (обычно экономика
и финансы, IT и промышленные технологии, здравоохранение).
Чтобы легко включаться на нужную длину волны, когда я дома, с женой
говорю по-английски, а с детками - в зависимости от дня недели. Не
дома - обычно по-татарски.

UNITED NATIONS NATIONS UNIES
1. The purpose of the present notice is to invite applications from qualified external applicants to the Competitive Examination for English-language interpreters tentatively scheduled on 12 and 13 January 2011 in New York, Geneva and other locations, according to the number and location of qualified applicants invited to take the examination and the availability of necessary technical equipment.
2. The purpose of this examination is to establish a roster (reserved list) from which present and future vacancies for English-language interpreters at United Nations headquarters in New York and at other duty stations will be filled. When vacancies occur, successful applicants will be recruited from the roster, subject to the requirements of the service in terms of subject-matter expertise and language combinations.
3. The examination is open to staff members of the United Nations at the P-3 level and below who meet the eligibility requirements, as well as to qualified external applicants. The deadline of application is the 10 December 2010.
4. Assignments are subject to rotation (mobility) and successful candidates may thereafter be called upon to serve at other duty stations, according to the needs of the Organization. Successful candidates are expected to serve a minimum of five years in language posts.
5. Applicants applying for the examination must:
(a) Have English as their main language; 1/
(b) Have a perfect command of English and an excellent knowledge of French and Russian or Spanish. The Board of Examiners, appointed by the Assistant Secretary-General for Human Resources Management, requires that applicants’ claims to knowledge of official languages be supported by relevant documentation. For this purpose, applicants should give a clear explanation in paragraph 31 of their application form (P.11) of how they acquired their claimed knowledge of the languages;
(c) Hold at least a three-year first level university degree from a recognized school of interpretation in which at least one full academic year is devoted to interpretation. Alternatively, applicants must hold a three-year degree or an equivalent qualification from a university or institution of equivalent status at which English is the language of instruction, and have 200 days of experience as conference interpreters or 200 days of work experience in the field of translation, editing, verbatim reporting or related fields. The Board of Examiners may, at its discretion, admit an applicant graduating from a university whose principal language of instruction is other than English provided he/she has adequate secondary educational qualifications from an establishment at which the principal language is English.
(d) Not have reached their 56th birthday by the deadline for submission of applications (10 December 2010). This requirement is based on the Organization’s need to recruit staff for language posts who can serve for a reasonable period of time during which they will have the opportunity to progress through the Organization’s career structure before reaching the mandatory retirement age of 62 years;
6. All applications will be reviewed by the Board of Examiners. In instances where a large number of applications are received, the Board reserves the right to admit to the examination only the most qualified applicants based on a review of the qualifications that are over and above the minimum criteria set out in paragraph 4. Applicants may be required to submit evidence of degrees, knowledge of languages and/or relevant experience prior to convocation. All applicants will be notified of the Board’s decision in respect of their application. The Board’s decisions are final.
7. The examination, to be tentatively held on 12 and 13 January 2011, will consist of two parts:
(a) Simultaneous interpretation into English from recordings of three speeches delivered in French (approximately 8 to 10 minutes per recording);
(b) Simultaneous interpretation into English from recordings of three speeches delivered in Russian or Spanish (approximately 8 to 10 minutes per recording).
8. The use of dictionaries or any other reference material will not be permitted during the examination. Examinees may not use personal computers to prepare their interpretation. In addition, cell phones and other electronic devices may not be used during the examination.
9. On the basis of the results of this examination, the Board of Examiners will invite selected examinees to a competency-based interview. The Board will interview each examinee to assess whether he or she possesses the competencies required for the position. The interview is an integral part of the examination. Therefore, examinees who are invited for an interview should not assume that they will be offered an appointment.
10. Travel expenses to and from the place of the examination will not be covered by the United Nations. However, travel expenses for the interview will be reimbursed by the United Nations. Kindly refer to the Q&A section of the website provided below.
11. On the basis of the overall results of the examination, the Board will recommend to the Assistant Secretary-General for Human Resources Management the names of candidates who qualify for inclusion in the roster (reserved list). All applicants admitted to the examination will be informed in writing of the Board’s final recommendation in respect of their candidature. The Board’s recommendations are not subject to appeal. The Board does not release individual scores or results.
12. When vacancies occur, successful candidates will be recruited from the relevant roster subject to the requirements of the service in terms of subject-matter expertise and language combinations. Successful candidates who receive an offer of appointment are strongly encouraged to accept it, as declining may affect their prospects of receiving a subsequent offer. A successful candidate, who declines two official offers, will be removed from the roster. For this purpose, a request for recruitment or a letter of intent sent by OHRM or local Human Resources Services in Offices Away from Headquarters via mail or email will be considered as official offer.
13. In order to service meetings of the General Assembly or the Security Council, interpreters are often called upon to work outside normal working hours, including weekends and holidays.
14. Successful candidates selected from the rosters to fill vacancies are normally offered an initial two-year appointment at the P-2 level. This level comprises 12 steps, each corresponding to an annual increment awarded if performance is satisfactory. Upon satisfactory completion of this trial period, their appointment will be extended and they may be promoted to the P-3 level, which comprises 15 steps. The fixed-term appointments of interpreters whose performance proves unsatisfactory will not be extended. Fully qualified interpreters with several years of internationally recognized professional language experience and demonstrated ability to perform high-quality work may be recruited at the journeyman level (P-3).
15. The base salary is subject to United Nations staff assessment, which operates like an income tax. The whole amount of the assessment is withheld at the source and salaries received are therefore net figures. In the event that a staff member’s salary is subject to national income taxation as well as to staff assessment, the United Nations will, within certain limits, refund the amount of such income tax payable in respect of the United Nations salary. Staff members also receive a non-pensionable post adjustment varying with the cost of living at the duty station. A staff member with no dependants at the P-2 level, step 1, in New York, at present receives $US 26,983.12 net per year as post adjustment. 16. In addition, staff members are entitled to the following benefits:
(a) Dependency benefits: at present $US 2,686.00 per year for each eligible child;
(b) Participation in the United Nations Joint Staff Pension Fund;
(c) Rental subsidy, if applicable.
17. Staff members who are assigned to a duty station which is not in their home country are entitled to:
(a) Education grant up to $US 25,949.00 per scholastic year for each eligible dependent child;
(b) Home leave to their country of nationality every two years, with the travel expenses of the staff member and his or her spouse and eligible dependent children paid by the United Nations, the first home leave being granted only if the staff member’s service is expected to continue at least six months beyond the second anniversary of the initial appointment;
(c) Assignment grant at the time of recruitment and repatriation grant upon separation, in accordance with the relevant provisions of the Staff Rules and Regulations;
(d) Removal of household effects, depending on the duty station.

21. Our fax lines may be very busy and hard to access on the last days before the deadline for submission of applications. Therefore applicants are also strongly encouraged to submit their application early to prevent problems with fax or email transmission.
Applications that are incomplete, handwritten or that are received after the above deadline will not be considered. No extensions for submission will be given if applications cannot be sent by the deadline because of transmission problems. Applicants should submit their application once only. It is not necessary to send multiple copies by email and fax. Only the first application received will be considered. Acknowledgements of receipt will be sent to all applicants as soon as their application is processed. Applicants should keep proof of submission of their application, for example a copy of the email or fax receipt containing the date of submission.
