So... for a long time now, I've been setting up VIEWS in ARCHICAD with the proper camera settings including TIME OF DAY. These views would then transfer over to ENSCAPE by merely using the CAMERA TRACKING button...
As per a requirement of a job interview, I am tasked with developing add-ons for Archicad with C++. Archicad is totally new to me and I just heard about the software from my interviewer this morning. I visited the ArchiCAD website for their API documentation, but it seems a bit unusual to me. I have never worked with any CAD software like API and Archicad examples are not yet available to me as I've just requested for a Developer ID and it might take 2/3 days to grant me this.
This is all I need to show the recruiter within 3-4 days for qualifying for the next round in the process. So, if anyone comes up with the helping docs or example, I will be truly grateful. Honestly, I am badly in need of a job.
You can follow this link -started-with-archicad-add-ons. This is a simple tutorial to create an simple Add-ons and add it to the Archicad software. And again if you installed the API Development Kit for the Archicad. In the installation location you will found a folder called "Examples" where you will get some of the demo project for the add-on. I think that will help you a lot.
Im an ArchiCAD user, look, when ArchiCAD have created the first version of ArchiCAD-Rhino-Grasshopper connection, it was always one way, luckily from version 21 and with the minumum update build 4022, the connection is bi-directional. So make sure you will work with ArchiCAD version 21 & with the last update.
In case you get an object with data attached then it will take a script to access the data and create a Honeybee zone from each ArchiCAD zone. This is the ideal workflow and if we can manage this to happen then you can have your live integration.
@Astaahl,
Thank you for posting your comments. The draw-back about this method is whenever you make a change in your ArchiCAD model you have to export the .3dm file manually. Also you have to reassign all the meta data which are not coming with the geometry.
If the grasshopper connection provides Objects with meta data then that can make the whole process much easier and make the connection somewhat live.
I allow myself to update this discussion because i am interesting to know more about the working process between ArchiCAD and Grasshopper. Did you find a way to export 3D information from ArchiCAD to Grasshopper with the Grasshopper connection?
Now, having the overall shape, it was the time to begin the fun part. It all started slowly with Lunchbox and dividing the shape in triangles with sizes more or less possible to recreate in real world.

Graphisoft is a company that specializes in the development of BIM software for the construction industry. This guide describes how to achieve greater productivity in Archicad with the Smart Selection tool.
With new and improved commands, Archicad 25 allows you to continue selections by switching between 2D and 3D views without needing to reselect items. Furthermore, you can also speed up your workflow by using overlapping elements and hiding the selected elements in the active view.
You can also control the visibility of elements and speed up your workflow with 3D overlapping elements by hiding selected elements. This will make other building elements more visible without hiding their layers or modifying layer combinations. Just right-click on the item you want to hide and choose the 'Hide Selection' command. Save this custom view for later if you want.
After downloading and installing the Enscape plugin, start Archicad with any model of your choice or even an empty scene. Enscape will appear as a menu item at the top of the Archicad window, next to Help.
In the Enscape window, click the button with the binocular icon in the toolbar at the top. This opens up Enscape View Management. Clicking any of these views will move the Enscape camera to the correct position and even update the time of day and visibility settings based on what has been set for that particular saved view. This helps to significantly speed up the amount of time it takes to prepare a presentation.
The Enscape Asset Library provides you with access to thousands of lightweight, high-quality 3D models that you can place in your scene. There are various categories, including accessories, furniture, vegetation, people, and street props.
Once created, the panorama can be found in the Upload Management area in the Enscape toolbar in Archicad (the icon with a cloud and up arrow). From here, you can save the panorama as an image file, but you can also share it via the Enscape cloud. This provides you with a shareable web browser link and a QR code, both of which provide immediate access to the panorama.
The QR code can be scanned with a mobile phone, which then opens up the panorama on the device for an interactive experience. This makes your project accessible to anyone who scans the QR code, be it a contractor at the construction site or a member of the community interested in exploring a proposed local project.
ArchiCad is easy to work with like sketch up, and the graphics are great. I can't comment too much on the 'annotation and 2D side of archiCad but i can with Revit, and its brilliant for annotating, especially in the architectural field.
As far as Collaboration goes, Revit is a no brainer, it can be used with a big host of programs with no issues. However exporting in ArchiCad has to be an IFC File to be able to be opened in anything else, the annoying part of this is you loose alot of information and model elements when you export which can be a bit of a pain. It is purely a design and visual program, and its good at that. Revit can be used for that, it can really be set up for anything depending on the user/company of course.
That's usually not how Autodesk works their marketing. Autodesk University is an exception, but they prefer to go to a prospective customer's workplace instead of seeking out customers. I have seen resellers at events, but with the new licensing strategy resellers are basically only supporting their current customers.
Now, here is the BAD side of archiCAD.... it does NOT play well with Revit. Contrary to what their website says, the import and export to and from archiCAD to Revit, Revit Structural and Revit MEP is terrible. You may be able to import and IFC from Revit, but it comes in as bulk object that you cannot do anything with until you redraw them as native tools from within ArchiCAD, also you will loose any "sheets" that were setup in Revit during the conversion. For instance we had a partnership with another Design firm and they did the SD and DD portion of the project and we were going to do the CDs. we though we could just import their fully developed Revit DD model (with sheets and details) into Archicad... but no sheets and nothing but bid bulky objects than cannot be edited... we had to finish the project in AutoCAD or rebuild the entire model in Arhicad.
I truly hate to say this because I really do love AchiCAD, but if you plan on doing any type of work where you will have consultants sharing BIM models and working with other firms BIM models you should choose Revit. In hind sight (its 20/20) I would choose Revit (even though I'm new at it and I dislike it) simply because if you live in the United States and use US based Consultants, most likely your consultants will be using an Autodesk product and they work well together. So my final recommendation is Revit and ONLY because they have the lions share of the market here in the US. In terms of which product is better, easier to learn and use and design in... ArchiCAD all day!
I'm been doing for the last year a lot of BIM, with Archicad, i mean as much BIM as you can get, everything linked and fully automated and plain and simple i reached the BIM limit in Archicad. i can't go further and this is where REVIT cames. What i can't do with Archicad with REVIT is possible.
TLDR: If you are planning to go full BIM (3D, 4D, 5D, 6D, 7D) you have to go with Revit since Archicad can't achieve all of those levels. If you are not, i still find revit more interesting (bigger community, add-ins, more powerful tool in general) but wherever you feel more comfortable should do it.
Architecture and building professionals as well as students can take Archicad for a test drive. GRAPHISOFT, the developers of Archicad, offers a 30-Day Trial and an educational version for students, teachers and schools. This download can be used by any professional for 30 days or by a student or professor for a period of one year (renewable annually) if they meet the academic requirements. After you activate your trial explore Archicad with short tutorials.
These module show you how to enable MasterKey on ArchiCAD, connect to your project, create keynotes and update keynotes throughout the drawing set with a single click! You can also download the complete documentation manual for MasterKey ArchiCAD here.
Back in 15 and 16 Archicad models used to come in triangulated Yet with Sketchup 14 and PlusSpec you can have a full LOD 350 model imported as IFC . There is a little more work to do yet this is a huge time advantage.
I hope this helps with your work flow as now you will have a bigger library to choose from. If you think it is an advantage please let me know and I have another 2000+ models that I can have changed. There are no parametrics to these models, they are basically dumb models. The native parametric files are available here
Since ARCHICAD 23 the Dialog Manager modul was extended with a Browser control. The Browser control uses the Chromium Embedded Framework (CEF). Using this control an embedded browser can be implemented inside ARCHICAD, which can load any site from a given URL. Using JavaScript the loaded site can communicate with the C++ Add-On and through that it can retrieve information from or control ARCHICAD.
