I am pumped about coming to fly or try to fly for a week.  However, should I not care to compete, do I need a GPS unit?    I do not have one now but suppose I can get one and learn to use it if it would enhance my experience there.     Feel free to give advice on any topic as I am a P2 who has not flown in a while.   Wish I had kept all those old magazine issues to reference the Tater Hill Open.

Cheers!

Hey Mike,

Jay Browder here. You do not have to have a GPS if you don't want to
get scored. Of course, you will need to register and pay for the Comp
entry to be able to fly during that week, since no free-flyers will be
allowed to fly during the comp. if you get a chance, read the FAQ
page on the FlyTaterHill.com website. It will tell you which GPS
units are allowed for scoring. If you can pick one up on eBay or
elsewhere, you will find that there will be lots of other Pilots that
will help you through the start-up and use.

Looking forward to seeing you at the Tater Hill Open!

Mike,

A GPS will help your flying no end. It will allow you to see what you glide ratios are and thereby determine how much bar or brake to use. Even if you are not flying the competition, a GPS will enhance your flying and give you a better chance on making transitions/crossing. There are two main brands to consider for the GPS/vario: Flytec and Flymaster. Flytec have been around for a while and have a great reputation. Flymaster has been in the US for 2 year and sell lower priced instruments which eventhough they are cheaper offer at least all of the functionality of the Flytec intsruments. At the Rat Race at least half of the pilots have Flymaster units.

I was going to pipe in here too...(Kim here of KimJay)...

Mike, you do not have to have a GPS, but like Jug...I think you will enjoy the comp and tasks much, much more if you have one!  Even if you don't have an interest in "competing" per say, you will be surprised how much fun it is to try to run the tasks.  Last year we actually had 2 divisions (like Rat Race).  We had a "sport" division and then the "open" division for the seasoned competitors.  The Tater Hill Open is a fun comp geared towards new competition pilots and the "sport" division is a much shorter task, generally a partial course of the full task, but it is so much fun!! This is such a great learning comp that you should really come with the idea of competing...we have lots of pilots that don't like flying in lots of gaggles or traffic...thats OK! This is the best comp to go at your pace on your time frame! You will learn soooooo much more if you decide to fly with a GPS and it really will help your flying where ever you fly in the future...go with a GPS...it WILL enhance your experience for sure!!!  Also, Kari Castle will have week long clinic which will be held every day on the hill...we have found Kari's clinics very helpful in the past and have already signed up for this year!  There is a link to her clinic on the Taterhill website.

Look forward to meeting you at the comp!!

Jay, Kim, and Jug,

OK I am convinced to try a GPS unit and enter the "sport" class.  Jay- I looked and moused over the FAQ page till my eyes hurt and found no list of acceptable GPS units.

New topic thread...  Since rides to the top are part of the event, can I assume that I do not need to bring an AWD vehicle?  I have a Subaru Forester and a Prius (road and hard surface only!).    Oh.... If parking is on grass I may need the Forester.  Please advise......and thanks for the info.

Cheers!

Mike

Mike,

Sorry, my mistake - try the Competition Info link on the
FlyTaterHill.com site for the GPS info.

Parking for the event is just off a paved road. Mostly parking in
hard packed grass areas.
