Hamza Yusuf is the cofounder of Zaytuna College in Berkeley, California (the first Muslim College in America). He has been studying and teaching classical Islamic disciplines for over thirty years. In a recent Georgetown University study, he has been listed among the 500 most influential Muslims in the world and is a frequent speaker at universities, conferences and is recognized as a leading proponent of inter-religious tolerance and respect. He is a co-president of Religions for Peace. He was also a special advisor to the United Nations' Alliance of Civilizations and one of the original 38 scholars who sent the Common Word to Pope Benedict XVI. He is licensed to teach in several subjects in the classical Islamic curriculum and has been a student of Shaykh Abdallah bin Bayyah, who is one of the greatest living authorities in Islamic Jurisprudence and legal theory as well as the Arabic language. He is a graduate of Religious Studies at San Jose State University, and he currently s erves as an advisor to both Stanford University’s Program in Islamic Studies and the Center for Islamic Studies at Berkeley’s Graduate Theological Union. He is the author of several research articles, Encyclopedia entries and books as well as a translator of Classical Islamic texts and poetry. He resides in the Greater Bay Area of California with his wife and five children.
His books include Purification of the Heart, The Content of Character, The Creed of Imam al-Tahawi, Agenda to Change our Condition, and Prayer of the Oppressed.
Professor George , professor of Politics at Princeton University, has served on the President's Council on Bioethics and as a presidential appointee to the United States Commission on Civil Rights. He is a former Judicial Fellow at the Supreme Court of the United States, where he received the Justice Tom C. Clark Award. Currently he serves on UNESCOâs World Commission on the Ethics of Scientific Knowledge and Technology. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. He is the author of In Defense of Natural Law, Making Men Moral: Civil Liberties and Public Morality, and The Clash of Orthodoxies: Law, Religion and Morality in Crisis. Professor George is a recipient of the Presidential Citizens Medal and many other honors, including the Stanley Kelley, Jr. Teaching Award from Princeton's Department of Politics. He holds honorary doctorates of law, ethics, science, letters, civil law, humane letters, and juridical science Professor George was the 2007 John Dewey Lecturer in Philosop hy of Law at Harvard University and the 2008 Judge Guido Calabresi Lecturer at Yale University.
