Hey there,

first of all thank you so much for this service.

second of all, I was wondering... does your service account for which LIST the backups are stored under? I have about 20 very well organised lists and I was wondering if I ever need to restore.

Hello Benny,

Yes, GTB exports the tasklist for each task, and GTI can keep tasks in their original tasklists. To see in detail what data is exported, refer to the Background information about Google Tasks data page.

If using GTI to import, then I recommend using the Import/Export GTBak format when exporting using GTB, which retains all the information and formatting (including Unicode characters) to ensure that imported tasks exactly match the exported tasks.

The only issue with importing tasklists is that Google treats the "default" tasklist slightly differently to all other tasklists [1]. The default tasklist cannot be deleted or overwritten, so the best way to
restore the tasks in the original account so that it EXACTLY matches your backup;
  1. Ensure that there are no existing tasks
    • Note that Google doesn't allow the default tasklist to be deleted, so any tasks in the default tasklist need to deleted individually
  2. Ensure that the default tasklist is the same as the name of the default tasklist name when the backup was created
  3. Import using the Add tasks to existing tasklists option

 To restore into a new account that EXACTLY matches your backup is;
  1. In the new account, delete any existing tasklists to ensure that there are no existing tasks.
    • Note that Google doesn't allow the default tasklist to be deleted, so any tasks in the default tasklist need to deleted individually
  2. Rename the default tasklist in the new account to the default tasklist name when the backup was created from the old account
    • For example, if your original account was named Cat, your original default tasklist may be named "My Cat List"
    • If you create a new account named Dog, you may find that your new account's default tasklist is called "Dog's list"
    • In this case, rename "Dog's list" in the new account to "My Cat List"
  3. Import using the Add tasks to existing tasklists option

I hope this helps,

Julie

[1] The default tasklist is usually named "Default", "Default List", "<AccountName>'s list" or "My <AccountName> list", but can have any name. The default tasklist is the tasklist that is displayed by default in the various web pages;
