He was an Oscorp scientist and mentor of Peter Parker. However, after his experiment failed, his own Mechanical Tentacles took control of his mind and turned him into a supervillain. Bearing the name Doctor Octopus (Doc Ock), he commits numerous crimes and becomes Spider-Man's second main rival. However, after eventually being returned to his senses by Spider-Man, who reveals himself as Peter, the latter persuades him to redeem himself by destroying his experiment, though this comes at the cost of his life.
Twenty years later, a past version of him shortly before his redemption and death, was accidentally transported to the year 2024 in an alternate universe through space and time from a spell performed by Doctor Strange, where that universe's Spider-Man helped release him from the corrosive AI of his tentacles. Indebted, Otto helped him, his native Spider-Man, and another alternate Spider-Man in their fight against their adversaries on Liberty Island. After the remaining villains were cured, Octavius along with the others were sent back to their respective universes, where he would be given a second chance at life in a branched/alternate timeline of his universe.
Otto Octavius was born in Schenectady, New York. Otto Octavius was a scientist by profession who studied science together with Curt Connors during his youth. In his mid-twenties, while pursuing a science degree in college, he met his wife Rosalie ("Rosie"), who was studying English literature. He tried to explain the Theory of Relativity and she tried to explain T. S. Eliot. The two maintained an open and honest relationship, which led to a long and happy marriage. The two of them were never able to have children. Otto later became a successful scientist, getting a PhD in Nuclear Physics.
Sometime later in his career as a scientist, Otto met businessman, scientist and head of Oscorp industry Norman Osborn as he befriended him. Although he saw him as greedy and misguided at times, Otto does see goodness within Norman and cared about him. Also, through his friendship with Norman, Otto became well acquainted with his son Harry Osborn.
In the 2000s, Otto dedicates his life towards researching and building a sustainable fusion power reactor with his wife's help. However, Otto was dismay to hear that his friend Norman died and saw on the news that he was a villain that went by Green Goblin, but his feelings about it were mixed. During the year 2004, he received funding for his project from Oscorp under the leadership of his old friend Harry Osborn. Oscorp also provided tritium, a precious and rare material vital to the success of the fusion reaction. One day, Otto was introduced to Harry's best friend Peter Parker and quickly befriended him when he witnesses his intelligences. Otto was also impressed that Peter shares the same ideals that he does about science and had the same interest. However, Otto ignored Peter's warning about a flaw in his fusion experiment as he noticed a miscalculation.
To help him perform a sustained fusion experiment, Octavius developed a set of artificially intelligent mechanical arms, which are impervious to heat and magnetism. Though the experiment overloads and becomes unstable, Octavius refuses to halt it, with devastating results: his wife is killed; the neural inhibitor chip that prevented the advanced A.I. of the arms from influencing Octavius's own mind was destroyed; and the arms were fused to his spine. Octavius's failed experiment left Oscorp bankrupt, much to the chagrin of Harry.
Unconscious, Octavius was taken to a hospital to have the appendages removed, but the tentacles assert their newly gained free will and brutally kill the surgeons. Octavius, awakening to the carnage wrought by the arms now fused to his spine, flees the hospital. He was nearly hit by an approaching taxicab, but the arms protected him by throwing the cab out of the way. Then, Octavius and his arms headed outside the city as they find an abounded warehouse at an abandoned pier on the Hudson River to hide in. J. Jonah Jameson christens him as "Doctor Octopus" or "Doc Ock."
Devastated by the destruction wrought by his tentacles and actions that caused the death of Rosie and reputation as a scientist, Octavius resolved to drown himself and his "monstrous" arms into the river. However, Octavius started hearing something in his head talking to him. Realizing that the A.I. within his arms were invading his mind, Octavius discovered that his inhibitor chip was destroyed in the accident. Octavius was then suggested by his arms, who were playing on his vanity, ego, and grief, to complete his experiment at any cost, blaming Spider-Man for the reactor's failure.
Octavius initially tried to resist his arms as he attempted to stay true to who he is and admits that Peter was right about miscalculating. Unfortunately, Octavius ended up succumbing to his arms will and decided to rebuild his machine as it will be bigger and stronger than before. His arms then suggested he become a criminal to get money to rebuild the fuse reactor, which he initially refused to do because he wasn't a criminal. However, his arms got in his head again, which led to him succumbing to their manipulations again. Doctor Octopus then stole some clothes to wear and a pair of sunglasses.
In an effort to finance his experiments, Doc Ock attempts to rob the First National Bank on Madison Avenue, where Peter Parker and his Aunt May happened to be present. Doctor Octopus easily overpowered Spider-Man and nearly crushed his head between two of his arms'. But Spider-Man flung a heavy table at Doc Ock, sending him crashing through a wall and outside. Doc Ock takes a random civilian, who just happened to be Peter's Aunt May, hostage, preventing the police from doing anything that might prevent his escape. After Spider-Man rescues Aunt May, she revises her former opinion of him and realizes that he is a hero. Doctor Octopus managed to get away with a few bags of coins. Having learned the extent of what his arms were capable of, he gathered the rest of his supplies by stealing from government research facilities and used his arms to reactivate the circuits at his hide out.
After rebuilding his fusion reactor, Doctor Octopus needed one final item: tritium. He goes to Harry Osborn's penthouse for it, where Harry calls Octavius a hack. Doctor Octopus threateningly dangled Harry over the edge of the Osborn mansion balcony, and the cowardly, frightened Harry proposes a deal. Harry agrees to give Doctor Octopus all the tritium he needs in exchange for capturing Spider-Man and bringing him back to him alive. He tells Doctor Octopus that Peter will tell him how to find him but urges him not to harm him.
Doctor Octopus found Peter and Mary Jane Watson in a coffee shop and greeted them by throwing a car through the window. Peter sensed the attack with his spider-sense and threw Mary Jane and himself out of the way. Doctor Octopus, realizing he can use Mary Jane as leverage, abducted her and told Peter to find Spider-Man or he would "peel the flesh off her bones." Spider-Man engaged Doctor Octopus in a battle, which started at the top of a clock tower at 3 o'clock and then continued on top of a train. During the battle, Octavius destroyed the brakes, forcing Spider-Man to rescue the passengers on the runaway train.
Spider-Man managed to stop the train before it could plunge over the end of the track, but at great physical exertion. He nearly falls, but the people in the train caught him and pulled him up and let him rest on the floor of the train car. Doctor Octopus arrived and the passengers defended Spider-Man, but his mechanical arms proved too powerful for them. Doctor Octopus captured Spider-Man and delivered him to Harry as arranged, taking the tritium in exchange. Spider-Man awakened and convinced Harry to reveal Doctor Octopus's whereabouts so he could rescue Mary Jane. Here, Spider-Man learned of Doctor Octopus's plan to rebuild the reactor - a disaster waiting to happen, the failure of the reactor could mean the destruction of the whole city.
Mary Jane, who was bound to a steel beam with large iron chains, insisted Doctor Octopus let her go, but he told her she would only bring the authorities. While Doctor Octopus busied himself with preparing the reactor, Spider-Man snuck down to rescue Mary Jane. However, one of Doc Ock's arms alerted him to Spider-Man's presence, and the two fought anew. After battling with Doctor Octopus, Spider-Man manages to stun his arms with an electric shock, giving Octavius a brief moment of clarity without the arms' influence. Peter reveals his true identity to Octavius, who recognizes him. Peter pleads with him to stop the machine, but his arms still have a certain amount of control over Octavius, which leads to him attempting to choke Peter. However, Peter gets through to Otto Octavius, which leads to Octavius agreeing. Back to his old self, he forces his arms to obey him.
Determined to end his doomsday experiment before it causes more harm, Octavius uses his mechanical arms to collapse the floor of the building, successfully drowning the fusion device at the cost of his own life. The heat from the reactor superheated the river water, killing Octavius instantly as he and his defunct reactor sank to the depths.
While choking Peter and shortly before coming to his senses and agreeing to destroy his second reactor, he was pulled into the year 2024 in an alternate universe (MCU universe) by Doctor Strange, who was casting a spell designed to erase everyone's knowledge that his Spider-Man was Peter Parker. Due to that universe's Peter Parker's interference, the spell began pulling in people from that knew that Spider-Man was Peter Parker from every universe within the multiverse into theirs. While Strange contained the spell, this alternate version of Otto was among the handful of people that was transported. This alternate version of Octavius was brought into the MCU universe alive, as he was pulled from his universe before his death. However, he was also pulled before he regained his senses and control of the arms, so he was still under the control of his arms and going by Doctor Octopus when he arrived in the MCU universe.
