Hi all,

I'm just starting out with TJ and I'm very excited. This looks like
the right way to do project planning and management. Thanks,
developers!

I don't exactly have a project. I have a team of people and a bunch
of tasks. The tasks are mostly independent but some of them have
deadlines, which of course should drive the order in which we work on
the tasks. I want to give TJ maximum flexibility, subject to the
following behavior:
1. We start tasks earlier than necessary if we have the resources
(ASAP rather than ALAP scheduling).
2. We meet our deadlines.
3. TJ tells me clearly if we have insufficient resources to meet a
deadline.

Originally I entered the deadlines as end dates for the tasks, but I
just realized that that leads to ALAP scheduling, while I would like
to start tasks early if we can. If I represent the deadlines as
milestones and have tasks precede them, that also leads to ALAP
scheduling.

Any ideas how I can have ASAP scheduling and deadlines?

Thanks in advance,

Jim Garrett

Jim,

you have a number of options here. Yes, providing an end date for a
task switches to ALAP scheduling. But you can always override this
with following 'scheduling asap' attribute.

In your case, I'd recommend to use milestones for the deadlines and
make them depend on those task that you like to get finished by then.
By using the isdependencyof() function with hidetask you can create
nice reports that show exactly what tasks are targeting a certain
milestone.
