Hello ROC's:

Viewing the tasker below, we are requesting to get feedback on the listed events (see the "Service to the Nation" section) and/or ideas for other events for which NWS provided excellent service. See the email below for specifics. While it's more likely the ROCs input would be IDSS related (Service to the Nation), it's conceivable you could have "Service Improvement" too, which is the other section.

Please have your input by the end of next week (earlier would be appreciated).

I am writing to request OPPSD and COO provide their highest priority FY 2023 NWS accomplishments. Please input accomplishments here no later than November 13, 2023 close of business. Please review the detailed guidance for writing accomplishments, found here. Please see FY 2022 Accomplishments for examples.

Please ensure accomplishments are 200 words or less. Accomplishments should be important in terms of high impact to the Nation, or to NWS’s ability to provide service now and in the future. CFO1 can integrate accomplishments across portfolios or across FMCs, if more than one office submits accomplishments on the same or similar topics. CFO1 plans to submit approximately 7 or 8 accomplishments to the AA and DAA, reflecting major projects, significant grants related activities, implementation of tools, and service to the Nation. The AA and DAA will select 4 to 5 accomplishments for inclusion in the FY 2025 Bluebook.

Elements of Accomplishments include:

  • Overview statement which articulates what NWS has done overall;
  • Specific actions taken by NWS staff;
  • Why this matters to the NWS or to the Nation;
  • Performance measures, where possible;
  • Supporting information and context;
  • Information related to investments including budget and appropriations, including supplemental and BIL, information, where possible.

Service to the Nation

  • IDSS for Severe weather outbreaks in Spring/Summer for South and Midwest
    • Office: Storm Prediction Center and COO Ops
    • Note, please see FY 2022 accomplishments as an example. (This can be event specific or encompass all the multiple billion dollar events.)
  • IDSS for California rains and flooding (and atmospheric rivers prediction)
    • Office: Weather Prediction Center and AFS
  • IDSS for Nor’easter
    • Office: Weather Prediction Center (and COO Ops, Regions and AFS, as needed)

Service Improvements

  • Next Generation Water Prediction Capability including National Water Model upgrades
    • Office: National Water Center and Office of Water Prediction
  • Flood Inundation Mapping
    • Office: National Water Center and Office of Water Prediction
  • AWIPS in cloud demonstration
    • Office: Central Processing
  • SLACK full operating capability (COTS solution)
    • Office: Office of Dissemination
    • Note, please see FY 2022 accomplishments as an example
  • Weather Alerts Language Translation progress
    • Office: Central Processing
    • Note, please see FY 2022 accomplishments as an example

Other topics for accomplishments to consider include: improvements to the operational modeling suite, expansion of WCOSS capacity, Space Weather improvements, radiosonde frequency migration completion, radar, IDSS for 2023 heatwave, IDSS for 2023 climate prediction, IDSS for Hurricane Lee, and IDSS for fire weather (including spot forecasting).
