Tasker does not start in Samsung Dex mode (September update for Galaxy S10)

Just installed the September Security update for my stock Samsung S10e. 
Now the phone supports the SamsungDex Mode which allows me to open and work with my installed Smartphone Apps on the PC screen.

Unfortunately, Tasker won't start anymore if in Dex mode. Is there anything which can be done about this? 
Running Tasker on my PC for configuration, programming and such would be cool.

I am using Teamviewer for this at the moment, which works fine too.
But if Tasker would run on Dex, that would be awesome.

Unfortunately I don't have a device that supports that mode myself so I can test it out, sorry! :(

Thanks for that. However I'm really sorry but I almost never develop something that I can't test except if it's something really simple to change. It's a huge time sink and a very frustrating experience for me. Sorry, hope you understand!

I would love to see Tasker work on DEX because I think it would be helpful to use a monitor/keyboard/mouse when trying to build a larger/more sophisticated automation APK. 

I understand you don't want to make changes if you can't test them.  It appears that a used/acceptable condition Galaxy S8 costs about $200.

I would happily contribute $25 towards buying you an S8 for testing.  If there are 9 other Samsung users who would like to see Tasker work with DEX and are willing to chip in $25 each to make it happen, then would you consider this development effort?  
(And TBH if there aren't 10 people willing to contribute $25 each, then, by all means, don't invest the energy!)

Hi again! I actually do already have an S9+ though. Would that work too? What exactly is needed for DEX To work on it? A USB-C to HDMI cable?

After yesterdays update to Android 10 I was looking forward to create profiles and tasks over Dex (much easier than typing on phone), but completely forgot, that Tasker is not supported (yet :) ). Any updates on this issue (not sure if Android 10 is available for S9 yet)?

Btw, in Android 10 you only need a regular USB data cable to run Dex mode, if this helps...

Hi Joao. I just wanted to say... I use my regular USB-C charging cable to startup Dex.
This works both on my Mac and my Windows pc.

No additional (overly priced) "dex-cables" needed just to try out the Dex functionality.

Yes, it's only on Android 10. 

But unfortunately, the S8 won't be updated to 10 (as you wrote to hope to get it soon on your S8). In one of previous posts you said, that you have S9+... that one will be updated, so I hope it was just a typo in your last post as I can't wait to use Tasker in DEX :).

Oh yeah, I have an S9+, sorry! :D Do you know when Android 10 is coming to that? Also, how do you start dex via USB? Do you need a special app on your PC?

It's hard to say, when it gets updated. In this article it is mentioned, that it could be till the end of this month... but Samsung is usually juyt a bit slower than expected, so... we'll see :). 

For Dex, you need this on your PC: 
Besides that just an ordinary USB data cable and off you go :).

Yeah, it seems, that for now only SEE/PHN/CHA/CCT CSC's have been updated. Surely others are also coming in the following days...

No prob, would be easier to follow if I knew your S9+ version (is it G9650, G965F, G965N, G965U,...) and CSC though...

Well, on my phone (but I already have Android 10, you may have it elsewhere) is under Settings -> About phone -> Software information -> Service provider SW version (a three letter code). 

But even if you can't find it, it's OK... I will let you know, when 965F's start getting it massively (for now it's just SouthEast Europe/SEE and Netherlands/PHN) ...

Assuming you are Portugese and your phone isn't provider locked, I reckon it's the right one :).

Hey, joao, good news... Update for TPH is available :): 
You should get it over OTA in your phone's settings, but in case you didn't, here's the link for download and manual flashing...

No luck unfortunately :( I think Samsung blacklisted Tasker in some way. By looking at this error list it seems that the error Tasker gets is related to "Force Stops and errors": https://www.samsung.com/us/support/troubleshooting/TSG01110916/  

There's nothing in the app's manifest that would stop it from running and some of my AutoApps run fine. Join doesn't run either.

Not sure how they are diferentiating it I think it's out of my control... :(

But on the link you provided, Samsung is stating, that they are in contact with developers to make sure that more apps will be supported. Just not sure, how they ment it... Do they make contact to developers about this or should developer contact them asking for clarification and ways to make an app compatible?

Unfortunately not, I'm no programmer myself and also have no connections to Samsung. 
Maybe just sending it to generic support e-mail adress or explain it via chat (the blue button "Contact" on the right side of the page on the link you provided)?

For some reason I can open Tasker in Dex mode now.
And it is SO frigging nice to work with!

now, let's hear... which Tasker version, which Android, which phone... tell us all, please :). 

I just can't make it work myself... Samsung Note 9 on Android 10 and Tasker 5.9.2.

Well, I guess it has something to do with the Mac app after all... on Windows it just doesn't work.

Still hopefully waiting and hoping that joao finds out something useful directly at Samsung :).

I just received the update to Android 10 on my S9+ (on Verizon in the USA) and took a first look at Dex. I can see very quickly how this could be useful with Tasker. Sadly, Tasker doesn't currently work in Dex mode for me, either. Other apps seem to work fine.

I've installed Samsung Dex on my windows 10 machine and  hooked up both an SM-N960U running Oreo 8.1.0, and an SM-N960U1 running Pie 9.0. On both phones I went thru every available USB connection option, file xfer, photo xfer, etc. The computer confirmed each switch that it was setting up the phone, but Samsung Dex never recognized either one. If Samsung software is failing on Samsung devices running 8, 9 and 10 I think its safe to say the software is garbage :(

OOOPs I see that this is for 10 only. T-Mobile just released an android 10 update for Note-9s. Im going to attempt to upgrade my SM-N960U1 unlocked phone to 10 and experiment more with Dex

Hi Guys,

 I have good news, I have been able to run Tasker in Dex. I have used the guide which is provided for the app "Desktop Hub for Samsung Dex", to activate the option "True Window", these are the steps:

1.In DeX mode-->Go settings-->Samsung DeX-->About Samsung DeX-->Click 5 times over "Samsung Dex Logo"-->Activate Samsung Dex developer options.

2. In developer options (for Android not for Samsung Dex)-->Enable 'Force activities to be re-sizable'-->Clear recent apps and reboot.

It works like a charm, but a problem occurs at least for me. 

Everytime I open Tasker in Dex, it runs normally but on every exit then (in Dex or on the phone) I get a message, that Tasker is missing Accessibility Access Permissions. The strange thing is, that Accessibility Access is granted, but I still get an error. I also tried flicking the Accessibility Access off and on again, but the error message remains. After phone reboot it goes away (everything runs normally), but as soon as I run Tasker in Dex again, the error returns. How and if it affects my profiles, is hard to say - I didn't notice any (more than usual :) ) failures in profile triggering, but that my also just be a coindcidence...

Anyone else expereincing this issue?
