Have you tried the app SoundAbout? I think it has an option for what you want.

I'll give it a try, it *appears* to do what I need based on feature #5 (5) Allow notification/alarm sounds play through the SPEAKER as well as the selected media audio setting. This setting can be unchecked so that notifications/alarms only play through the selected media setting.).

Thanks a ton!  I swear I've searched the market quite a few times over the past few months with no luck finding something like this, always figured Tasker would be my best bet.  Much appreciated!

No problem.

Please don't take this the wrong way, but it's scary to think that you're driving a car, with music playing, and with audio email notifications going off every minute, and you looking over at the widget icon to see if it's important.  Even if you're the best driver in the world, that kind of distraction makes you vulnerable to getting into an accident.   I can't imagine any work related email can be so important as to risk your life and the lives of those around you.

Not taken the wrong way at all - I think I made what I'm doing sound far more dangerous than it is.. Basically I work for a company that requires its technicians to be on-call 24x7x365.  I have to be on top of pages that come in, but not *every* email.  When we get a page its sent to a specific email address, so I am able to use TouchDown to filter those mails to give them bright red text in the inbox widget.  So basically what happens is as follows:

1. Phone is in dock on the dashboard, if email comes in I glance at the widget, and if I don't see red, I glance back (less fussing than changing the radio station)

2. If I see red, I pull over and stop the car before proceeding

Basically I just need to know if I'm getting paged or not, if I am, I stop the car, get out the laptop, hook up the wifi hotspot, etc and get to work on the problem.  If there's no red in the widget, I don't do anything (I never actually read any mail while driving).

If you use K9 email app you could just turn off the notification for emails and read the sender and subject of those emails sent from your pager?  Sure it will interrupt your music but if your going to pull over anyway...

I don't think I can even use K9, last I checked it doesn't support ActiveSync, and that's a requirement for my cormpany's exchange setup.

In any case I did try SoundAbout, it did something, but not really what I needed.  It was able to silence the alerts over bluetooth, but they wouldn't play over the phone's speaker either.  To make it even worse, the music still paused when the alert WOULD have played, but instead of the alert it was just silence for equal amount of time as the alert.

I'm starting to think this isn't possible, at least not without figuring out low-level /dev stuff about Android and writing a script.

I don't have a solution for you, but a couple of observations I've made over the years. I think the problem you are describing is either device dependant or Android version dependant. Probably the latter.

When I was using a Motorola Droid X, first on Froyo, then later on Gingerbread, all notifications would come only from the phone speaker. My Bluetooth would only pick up media and phone calls. Ever since I am using a Samsung Galaxy S3, first on Ice Cream Sandwich, now on Jellybean, my Bluetooth picks up notifications as well as phone and media. I suspect this is due to Android combining ringer and notification since ICS.

If I am correct, then your only solution would be to drop back to at least Gingerbread, or switch to a custom ROM that has altered this behavior. Or convince Google they screwed up and get them to change it back.

Could you turn off the notification volume (which you mentioned you tried before) and then have a Tasker profile trigger on the email notification and play a sound through an audio stream that doesn't go through bluetooth (you'll have to play around with the different stream options to find out if there even is one)?

For that matter you could turn off the notifications and filter your mail while in the car and have it only alert you to those particular messages. That's what I do in the car. Even if I'm on the phone I get alerted. You could just have the music stop until you restart it.

I've got the same problem. I wish someone would come up with a better solution to this. I have Tasker set up to read my text messages over my car speakers via bluetooth. It's really convenient and keeps me from being tempted to look at my phone while driving. But it also reads them through the phone speaker which gives a really annoying echo effect.

Have you tried turning the volume down on all but one audio stream to see if you can determine which stream goes to your car Bluetooth and which goes through your phone? Also, maybe try turning all the volumes down before connecting to Bluetooth, then connect to Bluetooth and turn just the Bluetooth stream up.

Chris, did that solution work for you? I'm having pretty much the same issue.

Unfortunately, no. I was able to determine over the course of time
however that this is not apparently a device-dependent problem or an
OS version dependent problem, as I've upgraded to a Nexus 5 since I
was originally having this issue, and the exact same behavior exists,
sadly.

I've learned to just live with it, and have a sub-par audio experience
while driving (every few minutes when an email comes in, audio cuts
out for a bit as always, quite annoying).

Hello Chris,

How did SoundAbout work for you?

My problem is likewise, but not with email, but with whatsapp.

I like to listen to music without being interrupted by the whatsapp notification sound. I prefer to have no whatsapp notification sound at all, or at least to not have it played through the speakers.

With Tasker I tried to add the profile that the notification volume of my phone drops to 0 as soon as I start my music app (Poweramp). Somehow, that doesn't happen and notif. sounds still come through. I must have done something wrong.

Apparently Tasker is unable to play notifications on just the phone speakers but it can play them on just the blue tooth. so at least you don't have to hear hear them twice.
