Just bought myself some NFC tags and was looking forward to having extra control of when I can kick off certain tasks.

Guess I should have done more research first as it seems you have to have your phone screen on and unlocked for them to work.  This really defeats the point of using them as if I have to unlock my phone I might as well just have a shortcut on my home screen :(

I know you can fix this by replacing the NFC apk but I don't want to root my phone so soon after getting it.  Anyone know if there is any way around this that doesn't require root??

cheers

I would be interested if there is a possibility for this. I did come across this plugin: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.aledthomas.taskerurllauncher

seems legit;

Process would be:

set some NFC tags to some tasker://<action> » scan » etc / repeat

Your only option is to root.  This is not changable in Tasker.  It is an Android specific setting that was not meant to be changed.  But with root this is possible.  My Custom Rom (Slimrom 4.3) for my S3 allows me to change whether its always available, just screen on, or screen on and unlocked.  I suggest rooting and finding a ROM with these settings, or just changing the apk file.  I mean if you decide not to root then this isn't possible

That's what I feared, I've only had the Nexus 5 about a month though so not ready to void the warranty just yet.

Was hoping there might be some work around I could use in tasker :-(

Think I've got around using the car dock in my car by turning the screen on when power is connected. So when the screen comes on it detects the tag stuck to the car bracket and runs my car mode task.  Just a shame, they're not going to be as useful as I'd hoped

Jacob,

How are you doing it in Slimrom?  Do you mean the SlimBean ROM, by any chance?  If so, can you post how you're getting it to stay on and ready even after the screen is off, please?

Thanks!

Search Google for nfc with screen off. You don't have to use a custom rom you just need to be rooted so you can replace the nfc.apk which is a system app. (I'm guessing the rom already includes one of these or implements it's own version).

If you are rooted I'd advise using something like titanium backup first though in case you have any issues.

This can also be done with an Xposed module. (Still needs Root to install the framework.

I'm currently doing it with an Xposed module, so that's not an issue.  However, just to maintain simplicity, if my ROM supports it, I'd rather do it through that instead of using an add-on, like Xposed.

Thanks!

I have a shiny new Nexus 5 so really not keen on rooting it just yet.  Thanks for those links, reading through Xposed Modules aren't supported on Android 4.4 yet anyway.
