Music Play loops the clip, without any way to stop it.

I am experimenting with Music Play.

When selecting "Loop", the sound loops continuously (of course).

However, the "stop" button flashes briefly and reverts to a "play" button, thus making me unable to stop the clip. I have found that I can stop the clip by opening the task, turning off "Loop", then restarting the task, when it plays the clip again but only once.

Also, curiously, some clips always loop continuously even without "Loop" set — the only way to stop the looping is to restart the phone!

Please could this be looked at.

Thank you.

That is because the task has ended.   The task started the music play which is a music player of sorts so the task no longer has control of it. The correct way to stop it is to use the action/ media / music stop.

Thank you for your reply, Rich D.

This contradicts the documentation, so the documentation is therefore incorrect.

I shall amend my testing accordingly.

Could you post where the contradiction is?

Go to the help either directly from Tasker's help for Music Play or the online help page (scroll down to "Music Play").

It says, "You can stop the playback before it is finished with the Stop Music action."

That is correct.   Perhaps I misunderstood. You stated-

However, the "stop" button flashes briefly and reverts to a "play" button, thus making me unable to stop the clip.

This lead me to believe you were talking about the play and stop button in the task edit screen.

Are you saying you can not stop the music play when you run a music stop action?

I have several music play/ stop actions I use daily and have never had a issue.   Could you post the task descriptions of the tasks where it is failing.  Be sure to check the run log "menu / more / run log" to make sure the actions are actually running.

To post your profile or task here...  Long press on the profile or task name / ( 3 dot menu with 4.0+ ) export / export "DESCRIPTION" to clipboard (not XML)

Any linked tasks will be exported with the profile they are linked to..

To be able to export, The beginner mode needs to be off and the profile needs to be named by you (Not the Tasker listed name.  Tasker will list your profile with the context name if you have not given it one).

Yes, I was indeed talking about those buttons. I saw them being used in one of the (very old) Tasker tutorial videos, but it doesn't work for me, which makes testing a tad more difficult.

Are you saying you can not stop the music play when you run a music stop action?

No; I tried what you said, and that worked, thank you. I wasn't able to stop the music with the Stop button in the task itself.

As a side issue, I have found that playing an MP3 clip works OK. But, if I play an OGG clip — with the Loop turned off — nevertheless, it loops. Quite bizarre and unappreciated! The OGG clip was one of the ringtones that came with Android.

Ok, got it...   not sure how it was accomplished on the video but stopping the task has never stopped a music play.

Not sure about that one. I do not think I have a OGC clip to test with.

It worked in the tutorial video (around 3:17 into the video), but you can see that it was several versions ago (published January 2014).

Have a look in your phone's folder /system/media/audio. You should find all the built-in sounds for alarms, notifications, ringtones and UI-events. The standard Android ones will all be Ogg; any from your OEM (if you don't have a Nexus) might be different. (Ogg is an open standard that has been around for quite a while.)

Thanks for all the time you've spent on this, Rich D.

Oh yea... they are all .ogg.   ..  :)

Yup same issue here, will loop indefinite. Pent did slip in a disclaimer in the help text.

Playback has been tested with 3gp, mp3 and wma formats.

And if you check the help text for a 'play notification' you will find this..

Note: in some Android versions ringtones will endlessly loop due to an Android bug.

I would imagine it is a android issue outside of taskers control. (Just a guess)
